Today we’d like to introduce you to Grace Chim.
Hi Grace, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in a traditional Asian family, no one was an artist, everyone was either a banker, lawyer or in the medical profession. So in order to please my parents, I did the traditional route, and pursued a Bachelor in Business as my first degree, I even landed a great corporate role after graduation. 2 years in, I knew that I couldn’t spend the rest of my life sitting behind the desk, and the Lord reminded me of the dream He had for me. With no experience, He opened the door to one of the top acting schools in New York City, He provided and that was the start.
Now I’m an international award winning actress working in Los Angeles, working in film, tv, voiceovers and many more.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Apart of the job of being an actor is the rejections, in the beginning, I had it immaturely linked to my worth, which had nothing to do it. But a lot of self discovery was found along the way, I thought I knew who I was, only to find out it was just a mere shadow of who I wanted to be seen as. So this career stuck with me through the different seasons of life, funny enough, the more I learnt to live, the better actor I became.
So definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, but it taught me how to be human.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a New Zealand born, Indonesian-Singaporean actress/singer trained in the American Academy of Dramatic Arts-New York. I’ve recently just finished voicing one of Mattel’s newest series and also wrapped filming a Crime feature film “A Wrongful Life Sentence” releasing on Amazon Prime 2027. Upcoming next, I’ll be starting production soon to shoot a supporting role for a romcom feature film “The Wedding” produced by renowned Carl Jackson Studios, and also voicing another animation feature film entitled Slick n Mordy. My most recent credits include television series Bali 2002 on STAN, award winning film Breaking the Silence (awarding her performance in the Vegas Movie Awards), Sci-Fi thriller Feature Risen, Marvel’s Shang-Chi Legend of the Ten Rings, Indonesian Feature Aku Atau Dia and various Off-Broadway theatre credits. On the side, I also sing and have been privileged to sing for His Majesty King Charles in the Buckingham Palace.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
I hate networking! I’m just going to say it, going to industry parties doesn’t work for me, I probably should be better in social media, but the introvert in me just wants to cozy up and watch shows on my bed while snacking. But it has to be done. I found that two things are essential in finding a mentor, he/she has to believe in your potential like you can’t, but also you should find a mentor who is where you want to be in the next 5 years.
Funny when I don’t find mentors, they actually rock up to me.. I focus on being a mentor to others/the younger generations, and naturally your mentor will come too.
