Rising Stars: Meet Kazuto Shimomura of New York

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kazuto Shimomura.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Both my father and grandfather were craftsmen who carved wood to make wooden boxes and traditional Japanese decorative pieces. Because of that, I always thought I’d like to work in craftsmanship or make things myself.
But when I was a teenager, I got really into fashion. I came across a feature on Comme des Garçons in a fashion magazine, and seeing those artistic hairstyles was the very first time I learned about the profession of a hairstylist. That’s what made me want to become one.
I started my career at Bumble and bumble, then moved to London, and now I’m based in New York.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I needed to move to a different country to grow as a hairstylist.
Every country has a different base style and taste.
It is sometimes difficult to adapt your style to a new country.
You need to keep an open mind for new perspectives on beauty.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I work as a hairstylist, focusing on photo shoots and fashion shows. I have the privilege of working with so many talented artists. It is especially inspiring to collaborate with gifted fashion designers and musicians. I would describe my style as high-end street, influenced by sculpture and craftsmanship since I originally wanted to get into design like my father and grandfather.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
I think it’s important to find people whose work reflects the style you love, as well as those who specialize in a style similar to yours or have a similar background or career path. Reach out to them respectfully and professionally. In my experience, many top professionals are willing to help young people who are passionate and working hard to pursue their goals.
