Today we’d like to introduce you to Ruja Kia.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Pantheon started as a dream to relive the cafés of our youth, where friends gathered, conversations flowed, plans were made, dreams were shared, and people found a sense of belonging. It was about creating a space that felt like more than just a coffee shop—a place where you could sit for hours, talk about life, imagine a different future, meet someone who might change your path, or simply exist without feeling alone. A place where community happened naturally, where strangers became familiar faces, and where every cup of coffee was an invitation to slow down and connect. At its heart, Pantheon was always meant to be a home away from home, a little piece of the world where people could come together and feel that they belonged.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
As a majority woman-owned, family-invested small business in California, Pantheon is part of a community of small businesses navigating the high costs of operating in California and the demands of a fast-paced American lifestyle. Like many small businesses, we have faced our share of challenges. Economic ups and downs, changes in the labor market, the political climate, and the ripple effects of world events have all impacted our journey as an immigrant-owned, family-run business. There have been highs and lows, moments of uncertainty, and lessons along the way. Through it all, West Hollywood has been a beautiful reminder of why community matters. We are grateful to be part of a place with supportive neighbors, kind people, and a community that continues to show up for the small businesses that give our city its character.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Coming from the nonprofit world, where my work has focused on supporting at-risk populations, community engagement, and connecting people with the services and resources they need, I have always believed in the power of human connection. That same mindset is at the heart of Pantheon. We want to create a space where our community, our staff, and everyone who crosses our path feels welcomed, supported, and valued.
We love seeing people gather around a table, hosting events, starting book clubs, sharing conversations, and finding any excuse to come together. For us, it has never been just about coffee. It is about creating opportunities for people to exchange energy, ideas, stories, and companionship. Sometimes, all we need is a welcoming space and a good cup of coffee to remind us that we are part of something bigger than ourselves.
One of the things that touches my heart most is when a customer shares that they wrote a book, finished a piece of writing, or created something meaningful while spending time at Pantheon. Knowing that our space has been part of someone’s creative process, that a conversation or a quiet moment over coffee has accompanied them as they brought an idea to life, means so much to me. These are the moments that remind me why we dreamed of Pantheon in the first place. We may serve coffee, but what we truly hope to offer is a place where people feel inspired, connected, and free to dream.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
We would love for Pantheon to not only survive but thrive. West Hollywood is home to so many wonderful coffee shops, each with its own personality, ideas, and place in the community, and we believe there is room for all of us to contribute something meaningful. Our hope is to see Pantheon become an even more vibrant gathering place, filled with more events, more book clubs, more conversations, and more opportunities for people to connect. We want to see people bring their ideas to life, share their passions, meet new friends, and create memories within our space. We want Pantheon to grow alongside the community that has welcomed us, and we hope that by continuing to show up for one another, we can build something that is not only sustainable as a small business but meaningful to the people who walk through our doors. For us, thriving means more than keeping our doors open. It means creating a space that people feel connected to, a place they want to return to, contribute to, and make their own.
