Inspiring Conversations with Jesse Morris of Music Law Pro

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jesse Morris.

Hi Jesse, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started as a musician and composer of music in several rock acts. When my musician friends found out I was a lawyer, I ended up starting my own music law firm. 15 years later I’m still at it representing songwriters, artists, and producers, as well as managers, labels, publishers, and music-related tech companies. I was co-chair of the LA Chapter of the Copyright Society and co-chair a Copyright Society annual Los Angeles event with the register of the Copyright Office. I’ve also spoken at events for UCLA, USC, the Association of Independent Music Publishers, California Lawyers for the Arts, Digital Entertainment World, SXSW, and the Beverly Hills Bar Association.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There have been ups and downs, but I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the journey along the way evolving as a Los Angeles music lawyer. Growing up in LA provided a useful context for the obstacles I’ve overcome starting my own firm and helping independent music professionals with their legal needs. The challenge of helping my clients overcome their struggles and celebrate their successes in the music industry has been an extremely rewarding path.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I liked to play drums in rock bands and volleyball at the beach. I loved playing music with friends and traveling with my family. One of my childhood memories was playing in the school band in front of over a thousand people which is something I always remember because of the way music can bring so many different types of people together.
