Rising Stars: Meet Wahsan Flores of Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Wahsan Flores.

Hi Wahsan, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born and raised in Los Angeles to Garifuna-Belizean parents, and music has always been around me. My dad was a DJ, and my older brothers were rappers and producers, so I naturally gravitated toward it. Around eight or nine years old, one of my best friends and I would sit in my room freestyling over 50 Cent, Ja Rule, and Jay-Z instrumentals onto a tape deck. We were just having fun, not knowing where it would lead.

When I was around 14, In high school at Washington Prep I joined a program called Bebop to Hip-Hop, where we sampled jazz records and turned them into our own music. At the end of the school year, we performed what we created. That was my first time performing, and I remember thinking, “I want to do this forever.” From there, I started taking music seriously and building my own path, founding HeadPhonez Entertainment, which eventually became HdPhonz Forevr LLC.

I spent years releasing music under the name BabyLion before transitioning to my birth name, Wahsan. Growing up in L.A. with Garifuna-Belizean roots has shaped who I am and the music I make. Hip-Hop is at my core, but I also pull from Caribbean music and R&B. I want my sound to reflect all the different parts of me.

As I’ve grown, I’ve realized I want my music to mean something beyond entertainment. I want people to believe in themselves, embrace where they come from, and go after what they want out of life. I’m still building, still learning, and still chasing the vision I had as a kid. Through my music and HdPhonz Forevr, I want to show people that you don’t have to choose between where you’re from and where you’re going. You can embrace both and still be great.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
This journey sometimes can feel lonely. Having a vision for yourself and still having to live in reality is hard, but I truly believe in myself and what I’m bringing to music. That belief and optimism is the things keeping me going.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
At the moment I am a DIY artist. I’m pretty much a one man my show. I write, produce, mix, promote, and etc. I am literally doing every job of when it comes to pursuing music. I like to say I make Hip Hop music with a Caribbean twist. It’s feel good music with messages. It’s a perfect blend between Hip Hop, R&B, and Caribbean sounds.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
Inspiring others to truly love their own story and take action on their biggest dreams. I know how it feels to believe in something so deeply and feel like you’re the only one who sees it. I know theirs others like me and I’m the soundtrack to someone with that point of view.
