Conversations with Leah Abdenour

Today we’d like to introduce you to Leah Abdenour.

Hi Leah, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’m Leah Estella Abdenour, a business owner, mother, experience creator, and magick maker. My creativity is so deeply inspired by the creativity of others. I absolutely love supporting it. I’m an experience creator for public, private, and corporate wellness with hints of magick (yes, with a K). I create retreats, rituals, spells, ceremonies, meditations, and workshops to ignite the spark of creativity in others. To remind them of their own inner magick and power. I love to connect others through the lens of play and crafting! I find it quite effective for wellness. If there’s any element of me that supports the healing of others, it’s my understanding the importance of inner child delight. 🙂

I have worked with several resorts and retreats, bringing my experiences all over the country.

I love creating with elements of nature, making ceremonial products like bath soaks, smudge wands, and cleansing mists. I also adorn selenite wands, daggers, and swords with magickal elements and activated bits.

I live in the Joshua Tree area. I moved here 4 years ago after almost 20 years in LA and a year in Bali. I have an 8 year old son, Bodhi.

While living in LA, I owned an above ground medical marijuana delivery for several years. It led me to create a network for female cannabis business owners, where we could share our stories and support each other. I also created a moon coven in LA + beyond where I host moon gatherings, clothing swaps, and weekly meditations. It’s been going for 7 years. It’s a beautiful way to celebrate sisterhood and magick. This is also when I created my business selling spell craft items & botanical gifts.

I now own Brewja, a downtown Joshua Tree plant medicine + tea shop with lots of magickal treats. We celebrate adaptogens, mind-bending items from nature, and witchy botanical creations.

When I’m not focused on my businesses, I adore spending time with my loves, cooking, festivals, laughter, play, reading fantasy novels, and stimulating conversation. Music & nature are my fuel.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Of course the road hasn’t been smooth – ha! This is what gives us wisdom and strength. The tough stuff is usually where the biggest gifts are found. Making mistakes, hitting road blocks, projects falling through, experiencing burnout – these are inevitable as you move through a career. But they’re also what force us to pivot, and in pivoting, we often explore things we would’ve otherwise missed along the way. My road has been long and winding, often full of tears. And yet somehow in our darkest depths or our biggest setbacks, we can see some light come through – when we keep going. The tides will always turn.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?

If I had to say what sets me apart from others, it’s my elements of play and approachability. I keep my services and offerings very human, relatable – staying grounded and authentic in my expression. Because we’re all human and nothing needs to follow a strict protocol or pattern. Let’s be messy and flawed – we can find our truest expression through that. I’d also say that my heavy background in cannabis supports my rebel nature and my love for all the magick that earth medicines provide us.

What were you like growing up?
Oh dear lord was I a serious kid. Wore the weight of the world on my shoulders for no good reason. Stressed over all that was unjust in the world. Argued over anything that didn’t seem fair or was unclear. Challenging to hold so much heaviness as a child. I had a deep dark underworld I held and spent so much time in – but didn’t understand. I was an achiever, cared too much about what others thought, started to find my respite at 8 years old when I started acting in theater… but took it all too seriously. Needed to loosen up. Needed to trust life more. Needed to release the heavy darkness that I always seemed to carry. I was well-liked, always in the “right” crowd, but never fully comfortable in my own skin or happy with myself. Tough place to be. So acting allowed me a certain level of escape from all that was “me”.

Becoming a raver at 19 really helped change things for me. And plant medicines about 10 years after that. Learning to surrender and not try to control. Letting my heart be open and love lead the way.
