Today we’d like to introduce you to Anna Chernova.
Hi Anna, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My name is Anna Chernova, and I’m a tattoo artist known as Horror Tattoo. I grew up in a small city in the Russian Far East, and my journey into tattooing started almost by accident when I was 20. I got my first inexpensive tattoo machine and quickly realized that this was what I wanted to dedicate my life to.
I have two art educations, and over the past 12 years, I’ve developed my own recognizable style inspired by horror, dark mythology, surrealism, and human emotions.
I started my career in Russia, eventually opening my own studio in Moscow before moving to the United States to pursue bigger opportunities. Since then, I’ve participated in international tattoo conventions, won awards, served as a judge.
What started as a fascination with tattooing has become much more than a career. It’s my way of bringing imaginary worlds and characters to life through art. I’m constantly experimenting, evolving, and finding new ways to push the boundaries of what tattooing can be.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
definitely wouldn’t say it’s been a smooth road. Moving to the United States was probably one of the biggest challenges of my life. I had already built a successful career in Russia, but moving to a completely different country meant starting over in many ways.
I had to build a new client base, adapt to a different culture, improve my English, and figure out how to run a business in a country where everything worked differently from what I was used to.
There were definitely moments of uncertainty, financial pressure, and exhaustion. But I think those experiences taught me to be independent, adaptable, and persistent.
One thing I’ve learned is that being successful doesn’t mean things get easier. The challenges just change, and you have to keep growing with them.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in horror-inspired tattoo art, primarily working in black and gray realism with elements of dark surrealism. Over the years, I’ve developed a recognizable style that combines disturbing imagery, intricate details, strong contrasts, and a sense of dark beauty.
I’ve always been fascinated by the darker side of art horror movies, mythology, unusual creatures, and the things that exist somewhere between beauty and fear. I love creating characters and imagery that feel unsettling but beautiful at the same time.
For me, horror isn’t just about making something scary. It’s about atmosphere, emotion, and storytelling. I want my tattoos to feel like fragments of a dark fantasy world, where even the most terrifying creatures can have their own elegance and personality.
What sets my work apart is my artistic interpretation of horror. I don’t simply reproduce existing images. I enjoy transforming ideas into original compositions, often combining realistic elements with surreal, almost impossible details.
I’m especially proud that I’ve built a career around an aesthetic that genuinely represents who I am as an artist. I never wanted to create work just because it was popular. I wanted to develop something recognizable as my own, and seeing people come to me specifically for my artistic vision is probably the most rewarding part of what I do.
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
I think one thing I’d love to share is that I don’t see myself as just a tattoo artist. Tattooing has been my main form of artistic expression for over a decade, but my creative interests have always gone beyond skin.
Lately, I’ve been exploring ways to bring my aesthetic into other forms of art, particularly jewelry design. I’m fascinated by the idea of turning dark, surreal imagery into physical objects that people can wear and keep for a lifetime.
I believe art doesn’t have to be traditionally beautiful or comfortable to be meaningful. Sometimes the things we find strange, unsettling, or even frightening can be the most fascinating.
My goal has always been to create something that makes people feel something, whether it’s a tattoo, a piece of jewelry, or something I haven’t even imagined yet.
And if there’s one thing I’d like people to take away from my story, it’s that you don’t have to fit into someone else’s idea of what an artist should be. The things that make your work unusual are often the things that make it worth remembering.
