Meet Noam Makover of Mid City/Koreatown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Noam Makover.

Hi Noam, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
From an early age, I’ve been drawn to the expressive possibilities of music across cultures and eras, gradually developing a distinctive voice under the umbrella of “jazz” that merges classical sensibilities, electronic experimentation, folk roots, and contemporary aesthetics. Having grown up in Rhode Island and studied in Miami, I’m a newcomer to the LA scene.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I feel like my generation in particular is going through a tough time. Between the brutal reality of being an artist/musician, uncertainty about AI’s future role, the abysmal job market, the consequences of being chronically online, and a bleak view of the world, speaking to other young creatives often feels dark. I explored some of these themes in “Cyprinidae,” my concept album about doomscrolling, short-form content, and mental health.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a musician with a super broad skill set: As a composer, I’ve written works for orchestras, big bands, chamber ensembles, jazz groups, and solo piano. I’ve arranged and orchestrated music for major festivals and international artists. I’ve self-produced my own music, playing all the instruments, recording, and mixing entire albums myself. As a multi-instrumentalist, I’ve toured and played all kinds of gigs across the country and abroad, including a recent performance at the Newport Jazz Festival. This lack of specialization is both a blessing and a curse; finding my musical identity and voice is an ongoing struggle.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I can’t point to any particular instance where I felt something life- or career-changing happened because I was at the right place at the right time. Reality has been much grimmer– hustling to find random odd jobs to make ends meet, often doubting myself and the decisions that led me here. A stroke of luck would be much welcomed, though.
