Check Out Nestor Vega’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nestor Vega.

Hi Nestor, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I picked up a camera back around 2018, mostly just shooting for fun and learning as I went. But things really shifted for me over the last few years. In 2024, I got hit with a cancer diagnosis, which meant major surgeries and radiation. Going through something like that completely rewires how you look at your life, your time, and what you’re putting your energy into.

Having my wife in my corner through every step of that fight was everything. While I was healing, picking the camera back up became my outlet to clear my head and stay present. Once I got on the other side of recovery, I realized life is too short not to bet on yourself, so I decided to take it seriously and really build this business. Now I cover community events, fairs, festivals, local business promos, and portraits all over Ventura County and SoCal. Honestly, every time I’m out on a shoot now, I’m just grateful to be healthy, grateful for my family’s support, and blessed to capture real life for people.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not at all. Teaching yourself both high-speed photography and clean video production while trying to learn the business side solo isn’t easy. It’s a lot of late nights watching tutorials, dialing in gear, and figuring out editing workflows through pure trial and error.

The biggest challenge starting out is just getting people to trust you when you don’t have a huge name yet. You have to grind through the slow months, show up consistently, and prove you’re reliable every single time. It took a lot of patience, but pushing through those slow stretches taught me how to think on my feet and never take an opportunity for granted.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in event photography, promotional video, and lifestyle portraits across Southern California. Most of what I do is fast-paced, capturing the vibe at regional festivals, outdoor community events, and working with local businesses to show off what they do.

What I’m most proud of is handling both stills and video seamlessly. A client doesn’t need to hire two different people; I can lock down crisp, sharp photos and turn around high-energy recap reels that capture the actual feeling of the day.

What sets me apart honestly isn’t the gear, it’s just how I treat people. A lot of people freeze up the second a lens is in their face. My goal is always to keep things relaxed, have fun, and make people feel comfortable so their real personality actually comes through. I show up early, I don’t treat shoots like a quick transaction, and I put real care into making sure the final product looks incredible.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Just being genuine and staying humble. You can buy the most expensive camera body on the market, but if you don’t know how to talk to people and make them feel seen, your work will always feel flat.

People remember how you made them feel to work with. If you’re dependable, honest, listen to what clients actually want, and treat every shoot with the same respect whether it’s a massive stage or a local shop, people notice. In this line of work, your word and your attitude are everything.
