Today we’d like to introduce you to Tasha Moon.
Hi Tasha, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
La Luna Salt started in my kitchen in Marina Del Rey, California, with a borrowed dehydrator and a handmade gift.
Every year, I’ve always enjoyed making gifts for friends and family, and one year I decided to experiment with infused sea salts. I borrowed a friend’s small dehydrator and created a Merlot-infused sea salt. Everyone who tried it loved it and kept telling me, “You should sell this.” At first, I wasn’t sure I wanted to take it that far, but the idea stayed with me. I started designing packaging, researching the certifications I would need, and slowly turning this little homemade gift into something real.
After about three months of developing the product, I took La Luna Salt to its very first event: The Los Angeles Times’ “The Taste” on the Paramount Pictures Studios backlot over Labor Day weekend in 2016. I brought 30 bottles of my Merlot-infused sea salt and sold 12 that night. I was shocked—and completely excited. It was the first moment I realized that people I didn’t know were willing to spend their money on something I had created! I was humbled and inspired!
From there, La Luna Salt continued to grow and evolve. Over the years, La Luna Salt products have been featured in subscription boxes, boutiques and online platforms, and have found their way into the kitchens of celebrity chefs, home cooks and everyone in between. I’ve participated in countless farmers markets, wine and art events, craft fairs, Christmas markets, wedding events and giveaways, meeting the people who use my products and seeing all the different ways they make them their own.
Then, in 2020, I created Kitchen Bitch, an all-purpose seasoning salt designed to make cooking easier, more fun and a lot less intimidating. The idea was simple: create one seasoning with the highest quality ingredients and undeniable flavor that could make anything taste incredible while giving people the confidence to experiment in the kitchen.
That idea has really become the heart of La Luna Salt. I want people to feel empowered to cook their own food, try something new and trust their instincts. I love the idea of someone opening their refrigerator, using what they already have and coming up with their own favorite Kitchen Bitch recipe.
The packaging was always meant to feel like something you’d want to leave on the counter instead of hiding away in a spice cabinet. Being the creative that I am, I wanted la luna salt products to not only taste incredible but something you’d want to display in your kitchen too!
For me, La Luna Salt is about making cooking feel approachable, creative and personal. It’s about giving people a starting point and then encouraging them to trust their taste, make it their own and have fun with it.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t been a smooth road. But, being a one-man show, I’ve had to learn my own limits or I would quickly burn out. I’ve also learned to ask for help when I need it. Sometimes when I’m feeling overwhelmed, I leave my city and drive somewhere else where I can draw inspiration and refill my cup.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
La Luna Salt is really about making cooking feel easier, more creative, and a lot more fun. I create specialty salts and seasonings that are designed to give people confidence in the kitchen, whether they love to cook or feel completely intimidated by it.
My best-known product is Kitchen Bitch, an all-purpose seasoning salt I created to take some of the guesswork out of cooking. I wanted something you could reach for when you open the refrigerator and think, “What am I going to make?” It works across so many different types of food, and the whole idea is to give people a starting point without feeling like they have to follow a recipe perfectly. I love when people who use my products send me recipes of the ways they use it. This has helped me build a community where we inspire each other equally and share ideas!
What sets La Luna Salt apart is that I have always cared just as much about how the products make people feel as I do about how they taste. Of course, the flavor has to be incredible, with only the best quality ingredients, but I also wanted the packaging to feel fun, bold, and something you actually want to leave out on your kitchen counter instead of hiding in a spice cabinet.
Brand-wise, I am probably most proud that La Luna Salt has grown into something that empowers people to trust themselves in the kitchen. Cooking can feel intimidating when you think you have to follow a complicated recipe perfectly. I want my products to help take away some of that pressure and remind people that they are allowed to experiment, make substitutions, try something new, and create food in their own way.
At the end of the day, La Luna Salt is not just about seasoning food. It is about helping people feel a little more confident, creative, and inspired in the kitchen. My hope is that someone uses one of my products as a starting point, makes something they are proud of, and then put their own spin on it the next time. That is really the heart of the brand.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
I don’t watch much television. But, every Sunday morning I spend a good part of the day watching the Cooking channel. I feel inspired when I watch shows like; The Kitchen, Pioneer Woman, Girl Meets Farm, and Delicious Miss Brown. Then I plan out my week ahead. I plan meals, creative projects, social media posts and gift ideas.
I’m very active. I play pickleball, hike, Pilates, and walk- a lot. Another way I like to stay active and inspired is to bring my dog Lola with me and drive up the coast to stop at cute neighborhoods so I can walk around and shop other small businesses and meet the locals. It fills my cup and we usually end up talking about food!
