Today we’d like to introduce you to Patrick Jankiewicz.
Hi Patrick, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Came to California from Detroit as a teenager with my family, Aerospace Engineer father, nurse mother with three brothers and a sister.
Fell in love with the place. Southern California had a lot more creative opportunities than you would find in the Midwest.
Interviewed Ray Bradbury for my school paper which gave me an interest in journalism and writing. (*That boyhood interview just sold to cult British film magazine INFINITY, and will be in every Barnes and Noble at the end of the month.)
After that, I started crashing movie sets. Got bit by the bug and started writing for magazines and then wrote books.
Alwats felt interviewing inspiring people inspires you.
Sitting down with visionaries like Steve Wozniak, James Cameron, Christopher Nolan, James Gunn, Zack Snyder and Shirley Manson can’t help but make you feel more creative.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Not always. When things slow down, you do copywriting and other work to pick up the slack.
As a teenager, Editors would reject my work “because we write stuff for teenagers, not the other way around!” By college, I wrote for over 20 magazines and sites.
As an adult, choosing a book that will draw enough readers to sell well is essential.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
It’s very detail oriented, time consuming work. You have to believe in the subject matter, talk to the right people and ask the right questions.
Whatever book you write, the book dictates when its done, not you. On some of then, you practically have to tear yourself away from it and trust you have covered the subject better than anyone else
I have written four books, two of which are over two pounds apiece.
I wrote for Marvel Comics, magazines all over North America and sold my indie comic book, COSPLAYER VERSUS SHARK , which was a big hit for Antarctic Press this summer.
Working alone on my boo
You have to be aware of every opportunity.
For example, in college, I wrote a television commercial for David Lynch. He then put me in the spot, which led to three more spots.
This gave me my S.A.G Card, which allowed me to find an agent and do over 50 commercials, for companies like GEICO, BURGER KING, BUD LIGHT, TIDE, HARDEES & CARL’S JR(As a Singing Waiter, I introduced the world to The Six Dollar Burger.)
This provided another weird side hustle. I’m 6″9 and played monsters and creeps in movies and videos.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
Luck is the only thing that makes everything possible. Knowing when you’re in an opportune moment is essential.
