Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Kathleen Besas.
Hi Dr. Kathleen , we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born and raised in Bohol, Philippines, and immigrated to the United States when I was 13 years old. Growing up between two cultures, I often felt like I didn’t fully belong in either one. So, like many children of immigrants, I learned to find my sense of worth through achievement. For a long time, I used achievement as an armor to hide a deep-seated desire for acceptance and belonging.
Growing up in a Filipino household, nursing is seen as the ultimate marker of success. I embraced that path wholeheartedly. I became a Registered Nurse, then a Board-Certified Family Nurse Practitioner, and eventually earned my Doctor of Nursing Practice. On paper, I had accomplished everything I thought I was supposed to accomplish. I had the degrees, the career, and the stability I had worked so hard for.
But I still felt a quiet restlessness.
I began realizing that survival-based success did not automatically equal fulfillment. There were parts of me—my creativity, my voice, and my artistic self-expression—that I had never really given myself permission to explore.
That realization became the beginning of a completely different chapter.
I started sharing more of my story online and eventually stepped into content creation, podcasting, speaking and media entrepreneurship. What initially began as a creative outlet grew into a larger mission: helping ambitious women of color and first-generation professionals realize that they don’t have to choose between being successful in their careers and exploring the deeper parts of who they are.
In June 2026, I launched Sala Talks, a podcast inspired by the Filipino “sala,” meaning living room. I wanted to recreate the feeling of gathering in a living room for the conversations we don’t always have publicly—about identity, ambition, culture, reinvention, spirituality, personal growth, and what happens when the life you worked so hard to build no longer feels like the whole story.
That journey also led me to found Kat Besas Media, where I now bring together my work as a Doctor of Nursing Practice, educator, speaker, storyteller, creator, and entrepreneur. I used to believe I had to choose one identity and become exceptional at it. Now, I believe the key to wholeness is not choosing between the different parts of ourselves, but learning to embrace all of them.
Nursing will always be part of my story. It gave me my foundation, my expertise, and my desire to serve. But it doesn’t have to be the entirety of who I am. Today, I aim to bridge the gap between clinical excellence and creative self-expression—and hopefully give other ambitious women of color and first-generation healthcare professionals permission to do the same. Nursing is my foundation, not my ceiling.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. In many ways, the hardest part was not building something new. It was giving myself permission to want something different.
As a first-generation immigrant and the eldest daughter in a Filipino family, I grew up with a very traditional definition of success: work hard, pursue a stable career, become financially independent, and make your family proud. I followed that path for most of my life, and I’m incredibly grateful for where it took me. But when I started exploring creativity, entrepreneurship, and a life beyond my clinical career, I had to confront a lot of fear, doubt and uncertainty.
There was also an identity shift that I wasn’t prepared for. When so much of your identity has been built around your career and accomplishments, asking “Who am I outside of my professional title?” can be incredibly uncomfortable. I had spent years knowing exactly what the next milestone was—another degree, another credential, another professional goal. Building something creative didn’t come with that same roadmap.
I’ve also had to learn how to be a beginner again. In healthcare, I had years of education and experience behind me. In media and creative entrepreneurship, I was learning everything from scratch—content creation, podcast and video production, branding, storytelling, business, and how to put my ideas into the world before they felt perfect. That required a different level of courage and vulnerability.
One of the biggest lessons has been accepting that growth can feel lonely. Not everyone will understand the vision you have for your life, especially when you’re stepping outside of what people have always known you for. I’ve had to become comfortable trusting myself even when I couldn’t explain exactly where all of this was going.
However, uncertainty has also been one of the greatest gifts of this chapter, as it is teaching me what it truly means to surrender to The Most High. I’m also learning that success doesn’t always mean climbing higher. Sometimes it means expanding laterally—making room for more creativity, more purpose, more connection, and more of who you actually are.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Kat Besas Media?
Kat Besas Media is a personal media company built around one central belief: we are more than our professional titles.
My work sits at the intersection of identity exploration, creative-self-expression, and media representation as a means of empowerment and personal liberation. I’m best known for creating content that encourages ambitious women of color to build multidimensional lives beyond their stable careers—to explore their creativity, share their stories, and redefine what success can look like for them.
What sets my brand apart is that I’m not teaching people to abandon the stable careers they worked hard to build. I’m showing them how to expand beyond them. I understand firsthand what it feels like to spend years building a successful professional identity and then realize there are still other parts of yourself asking to be explored. My philosophy is simple: your career can be your foundation without becoming your ceiling.
Under Kat Besas Media, I create educational and storytelling-driven content across social media, podcasting, speaking, and community experiences. I’m also the producer and host of Sala Talks, a podcast centered around honest conversations about identity, ambition, culture, career reinvention, and personal growth. Increasingly, my work also focuses on helping nurses recognize that the expertise, stories, and skills they already have can create opportunities beyond traditional nursing career paths.
Aside from that, I am also the founder of She is Rooted & Rising (SRR), a community initiative that brings women together through in-person experiences centered around connection, movement, and building meaningful relationships beyond social media. Together, these projects reflect what I ultimately want Kat Besas Media to be: not just a platform people consume, but a community where people feel seen, represented, and encouraged to explore who they are beyond their professional identities.
One of the things I’m most proud of is the community that has grown around this message. I’ve watched folks from different walks of life tell me that my content gave them permission to pursue an idea they had been sitting on, rediscover a creative part of themselves, or simply recognize that wanting more from life doesn’t mean they’re ungrateful for what they already have.
As Kat Besas Media continues to grow, I’m expanding into mentorship, speaking, personal branding resources, and experiences designed to help nurses, ambitious women of color, and first-generation healthcare professionals turn their expertise and stories into greater visibility, impact, and opportunity.
Ultimately, I want people to know that Kat Besas Media isn’t about becoming someone completely new. It’s about giving yourself permission to fully embrace who you already are. You can be proud of what you’ve built and still be curious about what else is possible.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
I think we’re going to see a major shift in how people think about both personal branding and traditional careers over the next five to ten years.
For a long time, we were taught to build our careers around a single professional identity. You became a nurse, a physician, a lawyer, an educator—and that title largely defined how people knew you professionally. Social media has completely disrupted that model. Today, professionals have the ability to build platforms around not only what they do, but also what they know, what they believe, and the stories and experiences that shaped them.
I think we’ll continue to see the rise of expert-led personal brands. People are realizing that the knowledge they’ve spent years developing has value outside of their traditional workplace. A healthcare professional, for example, can also become a speaker, creator, consultant, entrepreneur, and thought leader without abandoning their original profession.
At the same time, I think audiences are becoming less interested in perfectly curated “influencer” culture and more interested in people they can trust. Credentials alone aren’t enough and follower counts alone aren’t enough either. The people who will stand out will be those who can combine real expertise with authenticity, storytelling, and genuine connection.
Technology and AI will only accelerate this. Content will become easier and faster to produce, which means simply creating more content won’t necessarily make someone valuable. I believe our lived experiences, perspectives, communities, and ability to make people feel seen will become even more important.
Ultimately, I see the future becoming increasingly multidimensional. More people will build careers that don’t fit neatly into one box, and personal brands will become an important way for professionals to create opportunities, ownership, and impact beyond their traditional roles.
That shift is exactly why I’m building Kat Besas Media. I want to help first-generation professionals recognize that everything they’ve already built—their expertise, experiences, stories, and identities—can become the foundation for something much bigger.
