Today we’d like to introduce you to Chase Lock.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I am an artist, painting oil on canvas. I grew up in the graffiti world before getting into canvas work. I am originally from Minot North Dakota, I have been in Los Angeles for about 15 years or so painting all day everyday and I wouldn’t change it for the world.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No it hasn’t been easy by any stretch, I wouldn’t want it to not have challenges. You have to go through the lows and learn from them along the way, in order to truly understand your work in my opinion. Learning from your failures only makes you stronger.
The financial part of being an artist was the hardest part, to be able to live and also paint everyday isn’t easy, there are lots of distractions in the city so being disciplined is a must to truly make it.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I paint expressionism, oil on canvas. I prefer painting large scale canvases, I feel my work fits best being large scale. It bringings more excitement to any works in my opinion.
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
I grew up racing motocross so risk taking has always been a part of my life, I treat my art no differently. Life wouldn’t be as exciting without risk. If you’re going to take the risk, you better follow through with it or you’ll end up going two steps forwards and three steps backwards. You’ll fail a lot along the way, you just can’t give up on yourself and eventually it should click.
