Life & Work with Johanna Bialkin of Culver City

Today we’d like to introduce you to Johanna Bialkin.

Hi Johanna, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I founded Aldea — meaning “small village” — in 2005 in the heart of San Francisco’s Mission District. My background in the non-profit sector, paired with strong personal values, sparked the desire to create a space that offered not just sustainable goods, but real community connection.

From the start, we’ve offered a highly curated, hand-picked selection of stylish, eco-friendly nursery pieces, hip décor, and fun finds for the whole family. We care deeply about our impact — how our products are made, who makes them, and simply doing good overall — so we’ve always partnered exclusively with artisans who share that same vision. And we love to have a good time doing it: from art and cocktail events to mommy-and-me classes, Aldea has always been about more than just shopping.

At the heart of it all is service. Our well-trained teams walk families through the registry process, offer hands-on product demos, and help every customer find what truly fits their life.

Twenty years later, that same spirit has grown into four beloved stores — San Francisco, Culver City, San Jose, and Seattle — and now, we’re entering an exciting new chapter: franchising. As we expand, I’m thrilled to bring two decades of experience and heart to like-minded partners ready to build that same sense of village in their own communities.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Retail and specifically brick and mortar has not been a smooth ride. We have faced pandemics, economic downturns, fires and more.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m the founder & CEO of Aldea Home & Baby, a premium boutique baby and home goods retailer I started in 2005 in San Francisco’s Mission District. What began as a home goods store has grown into a beloved destination for expecting and new parents across four locations — SF, Culver City, San Jose, and Seattle. I built Aldea on one core belief: shopping for your family should feel personal, warm, and rooted in community, not transactional. In 2024, I launched Aldea’s franchise program to bring that same experience to new neighborhoods.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
Going to the beach as a kid, playing in the surf.
