Conversations with Jennifer Singleton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Singleton.

Hi Jennifer, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started doing hair in 1998 when I was 15 as something to do for the summer. I realized I loved it and kept going. By the time I graduated high school, I had my license for cosmetology. After that, I worked in a couple of salons and realized it wasn’t really for me. Then, a friend of mine told me they were hiring at Disneyland for a hair stylist to do princess wigs! I applied, passed their test, and was hired! Eventually, Local 706 (the film union for hair and makeup) took over their contract, and I got my union card at 23 years old. It was a natural progression to theater and Broadway, Daytime TV, Prime Time, then Feature Films. I’ve worked on Wicked, The Color Purple, Carmen, The Young & The Restless, Days of Our Lives, X-Men, Westworld, Parks & Recreation, Insidious, American Horror Story, All’s Fair, and right up to my most viral career moment which was Lip Sync Battle, designing and serving as Department Head while transforming Tom Holland into Rihanna & Channing Tatum into Beyoncé. I’ve been very fortunate in my career!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been a smooth road. As far as I’m aware, I’m the first woman in its nearly 90 year history to cross every single category in my union house, and the second person over all. I’ve put my work in and already have all my retirement hours and I’m only 44… elbow grease isn’t even the word. I’ve stumbled, been underestimated, not given credit… even sabotaged on certain projects. It’s never stopped me. Il never let anything stop me.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a hairstylist, wig maker, designer and creative for the film industry

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
That I’m also a published writer who is working on my very first high fantasy novel!
