Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Russell.
Hi Brittany, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’m from Detroit, Michigan, and I was raised by a single mother who put herself through her master’s program when I was a kid. Growing up, I was wild and got into a lot of fights, until my mom put me in a Black ski club. The women in that organization got me into shape.
I went to Michigan State University for undergrad, and after graduation my first job, at Accenture, moved me to Atlanta. Two years later I had my daughter and decided it was time for a change. First I switched companies to BCG. Then, while I was on maternity leave and raising my daughter alone, I studied for the LSAT and GRE.
In February 2020, when she was two, I met my husband. In March, I was awarded a fellowship to get my MBA at USC, which brought me to California. My original plan was a JD/MBA, but COVID complicated the timing and I missed the JD application. I still graduated with my MBA from USC in 2022, and a year later I started law school at Southwestern Law School, where I’ll graduate with my JD in May 2027.
Along the way, I landed what I thought was my dream job at Google. Nine months later, even with a top performance rating, I realized it wasn’t the right place for me, and I moved on. I took that summer to intern in the Sex Crimes Division of the L.A. County District Attorney’s Office. After that, I finished bartending school and picked up two more jobs to keep us going while I finished law school.
Now I’m an intern in the Business Affairs department at Fox, finishing my last year. I’m still bartending, and I’m making it work.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My career right now looks different than before. I’m currently in law school and will be graduating in May 2027. I am specializing in entertainment law and plan to revive my career working with talent as an entertainment lawyer. Previously i worked with influencers and artist in a management and strategy capacity. Once i graduate I will work with talent to protect themselves and their work. Negotiating their agreements, monetizing their Name image and likeliness, protecting their work with trademarks and copyrights. My goal is to help creatives protect themselves and have someone who looks like them and can understand how their experiences guide their decision making protect them in conversations they may not understand or know how to handle.
So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
