Meet Jaya Tengco of Los Angeles / OC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jaya Tengco.

Hi Jaya, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
It was really art, chance opportunities, and the pull towards the unknown that brought me out to Joshua Tree.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It is much smoother these days but itt has definitely been a challenge to find myself out here. The pieces of me that I have found along the way have been absolute gems — living out here inevitably changes you. You have to adapt to the timing of the desert.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am an artist and tarot/oracle reader out here in the high desert. It was never intentional, but the two practices have intertwined and evolved in the last several years. The work I do with my tarot clients can go deep and focus on parts of the self that need the most attention and exploration. I think as a way to balance my ego and my energy (being a tarot reader can take so much out of you!) I started taking my art practice more seriously. I was drawn to playful colors, strong symbolism, and intuitive art-making. Blending my art and tarot practices really solidified the idea the “art is magic and magic is real.”

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I am an avid pole dancer! I’ve been on this journey for almost 3 years now and it has been transformative for me. I’ve learned so much about myself, my body and how it moves, and so much more!
