Today we’d like to introduce you to Oscar Lopez.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My journey started in 2020 while studying TV and Film Production at California State University, Northridge. When COVID shut down the studios during my second semester, I lost access to the hands on experience I had gone to school for. I’ve always been someone who learns by doing, so I turned to what I like to call YouTube University.
At the time, I was working at Apple, and when we transitioned to working from home, I spent my free time teaching myself editing software like Premiere Pro, After Effects, Lightroom, and Photoshop. Eventually, I saved up enough to buy my first camera and started filming friends and family.
My first paid opportunity came from my longtime friend Alfonso Garcia, who was building his career as a tattoo artist. We grew up riding bikes together and had always documented our experiences. One day, I asked if I could film one of his tattoo appointments, and that experience opened my eyes to the business side of content creation.
During COVID, businesses were struggling to connect with customers through traditional word of mouth, so I saw an opportunity to help them tell their stories online. I fell in love with the speed and creative freedom of social media and realized I no longer wanted to pursue traditional TV and film.
One of my biggest turning points came when I received an opportunity to work with DJ Mustard and his 10 Summers team. I left Apple and spent six months working alongside them, learning about the entertainment industry, building relationships, and understanding the responsibility creatives have in shaping how people are perceived online.
In 2024, I began focusing on local businesses and transitioned from individual video projects to monthly content production. I realized that businesses didn’t just need one good video. They needed consistency, strategy, and someone who understood their brand.
Some of the most meaningful projects during that time were with businesses like Two Hommes, a staple in the Inglewood community (Top 101 Restaurants in california and in LA), and La Michoacana Snack Bar, a business that connects with the Mexican culture and experiences many of us grew up with. Being able to work with businesses that have such strong cultural roots and community connections made the work feel much more personal to me.
By 2025, I had reached a point where I couldn’t do everything myself. Around that time, I remember a conversation with a creative friend who told me, “Bro, I wish I could just get hired to show up and shoot, and have somebody else handle the business side.”
That conversation really stuck with me. I knew so many talented creatives who just wanted to focus on their art, and I also understood the challenges businesses faced when it came to marketing. I realized I could be the person who connected those two worlds.
That’s what inspired me to launch Motion Studios, a social first creative production agency based in Los Angeles. I wanted to create a place where businesses could come for content, branding, and marketing while giving talented creatives the opportunity to focus on what they do best.
Since then, we’ve grown our team and expanded into industries including restaurants, construction, consumer products, automotive, fashion, entertainment, and personal brands. We’ve had opportunities to contribute to campaigns involving brands like Prada, Valentino, Chanel, Genesis, Polestar, and Volvo, while continuing to work closely with local businesses and emerging brands.
One experience that really shaped my perspective was working with PILAZ Energy, a Mexican owned energy drink brand. As someone with Mexican and Honduran roots who grew up around action sports, it was exciting to work with a brand that represented a culture I connected with. Traveling to different states, covering events, developing partnerships, and watching a brand grow from the beginning taught me that marketing goes far beyond what people see on social media. It’s about relationships, community, and creating real experiences.
Today, one of our biggest focuses is helping contractors and business owners build recognizable brands and turn their online presence into real business opportunities. I love seeing how something as simple as a video can lead to relationships, customers, and potentially life changing opportunities.
With AI changing the creative industry, I believe authentic storytelling and personal experiences are becoming more valuable than ever.
At Motion Studios, we live and breathe content. One thing I always tell our clients is, “We speak the language of social media so you don’t have to.” Our job isn’t to give business owners another responsibility. It’s to help them stand out, tell their stories, and grow.
Looking back, it’s crazy to think this all started with a camera and YouTube tutorials during COVID. And the best part is, I still feel like we’re just getting started.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Absolutely not. Like any business owner, I face challenges almost every day. Sometimes it’s something as simple as a client not paying an invoice on time, a production day not going according to plan, or dealing with circumstances completely outside of our control.
But I think one of the biggest challenges of running a business is the responsibility that comes with your reputation. Your reputation is everything, and once you lose someone’s trust, it’s incredibly difficult to earn it back.
That’s why I’ve always valued clear communication and accountability. At Motion Studios, we’re constantly balancing what’s best for our clients with what’s best for our creative team. Sometimes that means having difficult conversations, giving honest feedback, or owning up to mistakes. Nobody is perfect, and mistakes are inevitable, but I’ve learned that how you handle those situations says a lot more about your character than the mistake itself. In many cases, taking accountability has actually helped us build stronger relationships with our clients.
Communication is something I take seriously, and I attribute a lot of that to my time working at Apple. Everyone communicates differently, and learning how to adapt to different personalities, expectations, and situations has been one of the most valuable skills I’ve developed.
Another challenge that doesn’t get talked about enough is how lonely entrepreneurship can feel. Even when you have a team, at the end of the day, you’re the one responsible for making decisions that affect everyone around you.
I remember another business owner telling me, “You have to remember that you’re responsible for someone else’s family eating that day.”
That really stuck with me. It’s one thing to be responsible for yourself, but it’s completely different when you have a team of people counting on you. Regardless of what’s happening behind the scenes, you have to show up, lead at 110% and make the best decisions you can.
There have definitely been nights where I’ve questioned everything and wondered if what we’re doing is actually making a difference.
But then I’ll walk into a restaurant we work with and ask a customer how they heard about the place. When they tell me Instagram, TikTok, or YouTube, it reminds me why I started.
Think about that for a second. Someone saw a piece of content we created, felt something from it, took time out of their day to visit that business, and spent their hard earned money there. Whether that content sparked hunger, built trust, or helped solve a problem, it created a real connection between a business and a customer.
That’s something I never take for granted.
The challenges never really go away. They just change as the business grows. But I’ve learned that being a business owner isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about being willing to take responsibility, communicate honestly, and continue showing up for the people who believe in what you’re building because I’ve learn that if you don’t, you are actually failing them too.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Motion Studios LA?
Motion Studios LA is a social first creative production and marketing agency based in Los Angeles. We specialize in helping businesses, entrepreneurs, and personal brands build their online presence through content creation, social media management, branding, and marketing campaigns.
Our services range from videography and photography to social media strategy, content production, paid advertising, and full social media management. Essentially, we want to be the creative team that businesses can rely on without having to build an entire marketing department themselves.
What sets us apart is that we approach content from both a creative and business perspective. We don’t just show up with cameras and make videos that look good. We take the time to understand the business, its audience, its goals, and what actually makes it different from everyone else.
I think one of the biggest mistakes businesses make with social media is trying to look like everybody else. We want to do the opposite. We want to find what makes each brand unique and build a strategy around that.
We’ve worked across a wide range of industries, including restaurants, construction, automotive, consumer products, fashion, entertainment, and personal brands. Whether we’re helping a local restaurant connect with its community or working with a contractor to build credibility and generate new business opportunities, our approach is always centered around understanding the people behind the brand.
One area we’re especially focused on right now is helping contractors and service based businesses become recognizable leaders in their industries. These businesses often do incredible work but don’t always have the time or resources to document it properly. We help turn that work into content that builds trust, attracts customers, and creates real business opportunities.
What I’m most proud of is the team and relationships we’ve been able to build. Motion Studios started with just me and a camera, and today I get to collaborate with talented editors, photographers, videographers, and other creatives who bring their own perspectives and skills to the table.
I’m also proud that we’ve been able to work with both established brands and smaller businesses that have deep roots in their communities. Some of the most meaningful projects we’ve worked on have been with people who are genuinely passionate about what they’re building.
As social media continues to evolve, especially with the growth of AI, I believe authentic storytelling and personal branding are becoming more important than ever. People want to connect with real people, real experiences, and businesses they can trust.
At Motion Studios, we understand that most business owners didn’t start their businesses because they wanted to become content creators. They started because they were passionate about their craft.
That’s where we come in.
“We speak the language of social media so you don’t have to.”
Our goal is to take that responsibility off their shoulders, help them build a recognizable brand, and allow them to focus on what they do best.
Ultimately, I want Motion Studios to be known as the team that doesn’t just create content, but genuinely cares about the businesses and people we work with.
What matters most to you?
Family without a doubt.
I grew up in a small, tight knit family where we talked about everything. They’ve always been my biggest supporters and the backbone of anything I’ve ever wanted to pursue. Growing up they made me feel like I could accomplish absolutely anything I put my mind to.
I’m incredibly grateful to have grown up in an open minded family that exposed me to different perspectives, cultures, and ways of thinking. They taught me the importance of empathy, understanding others, and being open to experiences outside of what I’m familiar with. I think a lot of those values have shaped the person I am today and the way I approach relationships, both personally and professionally.
A big part of why I work so hard is because I want to give back to the people who have given me everything they could.
Outside of family, relationships mean everything to me. I’ve been fortunate to meet incredible people throughout my life who have opened doors, believed in me, and supported what I’m building. I never take that for granted.
I believe in showing up for people the same way they’ve shown up for me. Whether it’s family, friends, my team, or the people I meet along the way, I want to build relationships where we genuinely want to see each other succeed.
At the end of the day, I don’t measure success solely by how much money I make or how big Motion Studios becomes. I measure it by the opportunities I’m able to create, the experiences I’m able to share, and the people I’m able to bring along with me.
If everything I’m building allows the people I love to live a life with more freedom, more experiences, and fewer limitations, then to me that’s success.
