Meet Marisol Alberto of New York

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marisol Alberto.

Hi Marisol, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Growing up, I was always doodling on my papers at school, adding my own flair with designs along the sides of the pages. “Watching movies” meant knowing all the lines but having no idea what the scenes actually looked like because I was too busy drawing the entire time!

My father was the neighborhood’s art teacher. I grew up in East Harlem, El Barrio, where everyone knew me as “Little Carmelo” because they knew of my father’s artistry, and I looked just like him. Art has always been a part of who I am, and in many ways, it’s something I inherited from him.

It wasn’t until I became an adult and social media took off that I had the opportunity to share my talent with a wider audience. I am beyond grateful for the trust and support of so many friends, family members, and even strangers who have allowed me to bring their visions to life. Whether it was through a tattoo, a portrait of a loved one, or a piece that combined my artistic interpretation with their own, each opportunity has been meaningful to me.

Today, I continue to create custom artwork and designs through social media while also participating in pop-up shows throughout the tri-state area and across the country in Southern California. What started as a childhood passion has grown into something so much bigger, and I am grateful to continue sharing a piece of myself through my art.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road, but such is life. From being a female tattoo artist in NYC, navigating what has traditionally been considered a “man’s field,” to spending countless hours and days creating artwork for a show, only to walk away with little to no profit to show for it. I’ve had moments when I felt little to no desire to create, and other times when I let opportunities slip through my fingers. Some of those missed opportunities still stay with me, but at the end of the day, every experience has taught me something valuable. Through the challenges, setbacks, and lessons learned, I continue to grow, not only as an artist but as a person.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a creative at heart! I primarily paint on canvases, creating art that educates, enlightens, motivates, and helps bring one’s vision to life. I specialize in pop art portraits and tactile paintings, bringing my own unique style and perspective to every piece I create. What sets me apart from other artists is simply being myself, staying true to my creativity, and allowing my passion and individuality to shine through my work.

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
I am also an aspiring Art Therapist. I’ve witnessed how liberating art can be for so many people, and I am passionate about the healing power of both art and therapy. I am currently pursuing my Master’s in Social Work, proudly maintaining a 4.0 GPA. Painting allows me to unwind at the end of the day, serving as a reminder of the battles I face in my own life, as well as the countless battles others face that I may know nothing about.
