Today we’d like to introduce you to Sterling Victorian.
Hi Sterling, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I was born and raised in Phoenix, AZ by a beautiful strong but very young single mother. She was very big on following her dreams and trying to get us out of our difficult circumstances. In the process of her pursuing her career she left me and my sister to be raised by my grandparents. My grandmother was very conservative, really the polar opposite of my mother. Which was quite confusing. It’s the tension between these two worlds that I was raised in that I believe made me who I am. There was not a lot of freedom or support to be myself when I was younger. That was something I have had to fight for throughout my life. The freedom to be all the parts of myself that weren’t watered as a child. And now It’s become my call and passion to help others free themselves from whatever their confines may be. Mentally, emotionally, trauma wise, so that they can love and be themselves in a healthy productive and healed way. Whether this be through therapy, music, community building, events, etc.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It was not a smooth or easy journey. My mental health was my biggest obstacle. The developmental trauma and religious trauma I experienced as a child was debilitating . I had to heal myself in order to free myself in order to love myself and in turn be myself. So that I could find the courage to do all the things I love to do. And find the courage to be my queer spiritual ratchet hippie black ass self. It was quite the process and took many years. Lots of therapy. Many retreats. Lots of meditation, pilgrimages if you will. And It’s a perpetual journey that still continues as I grow and change and desire to level up even more.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My specialty is empowering and loving on my community though the art of music and healing. I do this via work as DJ/Artist, a sound healer, a self-love coach, and mental health advocate. I am currently finishing my masters degree and working towards becoming a licensed marriage and family therapist, I am most know for my work as a musician and my healing events. My specialty I would like to believe is helping people fall more deeply in love with themselves through the use of the tools I have mentioned. Whether thats through a powerful DJ set or a powerful sound bath and ceremony, To me it all points towards love and healing and those are my passions. I am most proud of the amazing partnerships and spaces I have collaborated to curate. With groups and legends such as Queer Aunties, 3BlackKids, Jade Fox, Brian Henry, Hella Good, Gritty in Pink, Culture House, Critical Breakdown, Hip-Hop Caucus and so many more. I feel blessed to have built community and traveled the world spreading love, healing, and good energy. Hmmmm what sets me apart from others? I rather feed someone else’s soul over my own ego. My ego has died many deaths for this work. LOL. dead ass.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
If by luck you mean Gods favor and faith. Lots of it. My relationship with God is my cornerstone. And She has performed many wild miracles on my behalf. And this relationship has continued to prove over and over again that no matter how imperfect I am I can still be used in purpose and in love. Faith is such a powerful, magic, inspiring journey.
