Exploring Life & Business with Pauline Malcolm of BrandStoryArchitech

Today we’d like to introduce you to Pauline Malcolm.

Hi Pauline, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My story has really been a journey from the C-suite to building something of my own. I’ve spent more than 25 years in media, technology, sales, and marketing, with a career that has taken me from Silicon Alley to Silicon Valley and now Los Angeles. Throughout that journey, the common thread has been connecting great storytelling with business opportunities.

I’ve held leadership roles at companies including Disney, Condé Nast’s WIRED, and Essence Ventures, where I served as Chief Revenue Officer. Those experiences gave me an incredible foundation in building partnerships, leading teams, and growing businesses. They also gave me a firsthand understanding of the value that culture and community bring to a brand—and how important it is for the people creating that value to share in the financial opportunity.

That’s a big part of why I founded BrandStory Architech. I wanted to bring the strategy, relationships, and revenue expertise I had developed in corporate media to creators and entrepreneurs building their own platforms. There are so many talented people who have built loyal communities and have real influence. Helping them turn that influence into a sustainable business is work I’m passionate about, especially when it comes to creating more opportunities for women and creators of color.

Today, our work spans brand partnerships, talent strategy, branded content, and original programming. We help brands connect with audiences through creators, and we help creators develop opportunities that can grow with them. One project I’m especially proud of is our work with OWN’s (Oprah Winfrey Network) Creator Studio Lab on *The Dating Download*, hosted by Kendra G. Being involved from concept through production and seeing it move into a second season has been exciting. It brings together so much of what I love: talent, storytelling, strategy, and building something with room to grow.

Going from executive to entrepreneur has stretched me. You bring all of your experience with you, but you’re also learning every day as you build a team and take responsibility for your own vision. I’m proud of what we’re creating at BrandStory Architech, and I’m still very much in building mode. The goal is to create lasting businesses and help more people benefit financially from the talent, ideas, and communities they’ve worked so hard to build.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I don’t think any road is completely smooth, and mine certainly hasn’t been. Entrepreneurship comes with challenges regardless of your background, but being a woman—and a woman of color—adds another layer. You’re navigating the realities of building a business while also navigating spaces where access and opportunity haven’t always been equal.

One of the biggest adjustments has been moving from leading within established companies to building the infrastructure yourself. You can bring years of experience and strong relationships, but you still have to earn the business, build the right team, manage cash flow, and keep things moving when plans change. Experience helps, but it doesn’t make you immune to the challenges.

I’ve had high highs and very low lows in the same day. You can be celebrating a new opportunity in the morning and working through a difficult business decision that afternoon. Learning how to manage that emotional swing—to appreciate the wins without letting every setback shake your confidence—has been a big part of the journey for me.

But there’s something incredibly rewarding about building something you have ownership in. You get to shape the vision, create opportunities for other people, and see your work turn into something that can last. So no, it hasn’t been a smooth ride, but I wouldn’t trade it. I’ve learned so much about business, about people, and about myself along the way, and I’m still learning.

We’ve been impressed with BrandStoryArchitech, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
BrandStory Architech is a creator-led marketing and entertainment company that brings together brands, talent, and storytelling to build business opportunities. We work with brands looking to connect with audiences in meaningful ways, and with creators, talent, and media companies looking to grow their businesses.

Our work spans brand partnerships, sponsorships, revenue strategy, branded content, and original programming. That can mean connecting a creator with the right brand, helping a media company develop its sales strategy, or taking a show concept from an idea through production. We bring both the creative vision and the business strategy to the table.

What sets us apart is that we understand the different sides of a partnership. I’ve spent more than 25 years working inside major media organizations, leading revenue teams and working with advertisers. Now, I bring that experience to helping creators and brands build together. We think about what makes a compelling story, why an audience will care, and how that idea can deliver value for everyone involved.

We also look beyond follower counts. A creator’s relationship with their community, their credibility, and their ability to inspire action are central to how we think about partnerships. The fit has to make sense for the talent, the brand, and the audience. That’s how you build something with staying power.

Brand-wise, I’m most proud of how we’re growing into a company that can help develop and build original entertainment. Our work with OWN’s (Oprah Winfrey Network) Creator Studio Lab on *The Dating Download*, hosted by Kendra G, is a great example. Being involved from concept through production and seeing the series move into a second season reflects the kind of work I want us to keep doing: bringing talented people, strong ideas, and the right partners together.

I’m equally proud that creating opportunities for women and creators of color is part of our purpose. There is so much value being created in these communities, and I want to help ensure that value translates into revenue, ownership, and long-term growth.

What I want readers to know is that we’re hands-on partners. Whether you’re a brand trying to reach a community, a creator ready to expand your business, or a media company looking to grow revenue, we help connect the vision to a plan and do the work to bring it to life.
