Today we’d like to introduce you to Paul Gibert.
Hi Paul, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Growing up with two talented older sisters had a profound effect on me and my path towards creativity. One of my sisters was a brilliant painter from as far back as I can remember while my other sister developed into gifted award winning photographer. I worked at many odd jobs throughout my life. In New York City I worked at a record store, in clothing retail, as a tour manager and eventually at a record label. After that I studied acting, started a theater company and worked on some films. It took me years after all that to find my own creative path but when I finally did it was photography. I joined a group on social media around fifteen years ago and started shooting and posting photographs daily. I continued this practice up till a couple of years ago. During that time I started exhibiting my work, in both solo and group shows. Eventually I was offered gallery representation. Over the years I have been fortunate to have people collect my photography and have been published in photography magazines. Many of my images come from the years I have lived in Los Angeles.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. The challenges have been too many to name but I believe the primary one has been to financially survive while remaining committed to my photography. Another one has been to find those who value art. In a world that often seems to view creative pursuits solely from a monetary perspective the struggle has been to find value beyond that. Walking through the world as an active observer and capturing images with my camera is a need that seems to only be satisfied by the act itself. The ultimate goal for me is to always remain true my craft whether my work sells or not.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My photography straddles different categories but ultimately is considered fine art. I shoot in black and white and have from the beginning of my photographic journey. I guess I am most proud of the body of work I have built over my time as a photographer. My practice of shooting daily helped me build a broad portfolio of work that covers everything from urban cityscape to landscape photography. I have been fortunate to have my work collected by people who appreciate the visual perspective that expresses itself through the images I take. Above all my commitment to my photography and my desire to continue evolving as an artist has been my driving force.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
Probably the most vivid and impactful memories childhood memories come from my time living with relatives in Spain. The need to learn the language and the experience of a culture unlike the one I was familiar with continues to influence me to this day
