Conversations with Lori Fetrick

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lori Fetrick.

Hi Lori, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My story has always been rooted in fitness, competition, and pushing myself beyond what I thought was possible. I started as an athlete and bodybuilder, and that path eventually led me to becoming “Ice” on the original American Gladiators — an experience that changed my life and gave me a platform I never could have imagined.

But my story didn’t end when American Gladiators did. Over the years, I’ve continued to reinvent myself through fitness, business, media, podcasting, and social media. I even returned to the competition stage in my 60s, proving to myself — and hopefully to other women — that strength, confidence, and ambition don’t have an expiration date.

Today, at 63, I’m still building. My focus is on inspiring people, especially women as they get older, to stay strong, take care of themselves, and never allow age to dictate what they’re capable of. I’ve had successes, setbacks, injuries and plenty of reinventions along the way, but I think that’s what makes my story mine: I’ve never stopped evolving.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Definitely not a smooth road — but I don’t think the interesting stories ever are.

One of my biggest challenges was learning how to reinvent myself after American Gladiators. When you’ve been known for something so iconic, it’s easy for people to think that’s where your story ends. I had to figure out who I was beyond “Ice” and what the next chapter looked like.

There have been career highs and lows, financial ups and downs, relationships that changed, opportunities that disappeared, and times when I had to completely start over. More recently, a major knee injury took away the one constant I’ve always relied on — training. As a lifelong athlete, that challenged me mentally as much as physically.

And getting older brings its own challenge, especially for women. Society has a funny way of telling women to become quieter and less visible as they age. I’ve chosen to do the opposite.

At 63, I’m still creating, competing, taking risks and figuring out what’s next. I’ve learned that resilience isn’t about never getting knocked down. It’s about refusing to believe that being knocked down means you’re finished.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m probably best known as “Ice” from the original American Gladiators, but fitness and athletics have been the foundation of my life long before and long after the show.

Today, my work has evolved into a combination of fitness, media, content creation, podcasting and brand partnerships. Through my platforms, I share what I’ve learned from decades of training and competing, while also talking honestly about aging, strength, confidence and what it means to continue challenging yourself as you get older.

One of the things I’m most proud of is that I haven’t simply relied on something I accomplished more than 30 years ago. I’ve continued to reinvent myself. In my 60s, I returned to competitive bodybuilding, built a new audience through social media, launched my podcast, and created another chapter of my career.

What sets me apart is that I’m not talking about longevity from the sidelines — I’m living it. I’m 63, I’m still training, creating, taking risks and pushing myself. I want women in particular to see that getting older doesn’t mean becoming less relevant, less strong or less ambitious.

I may always be “Ice,” and I’m incredibly proud of that part of my story. But I’m even more excited about showing people what comes next.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I think what surprises people most is that I’m actually much more sensitive and introspective than the “Ice” persona would lead you to believe. People have seen this strong, confident, competitive woman for decades and assume that confidence has always come naturally to me. It hasn’t.

I’ve had the same insecurities, self-doubt and moments of questioning myself that everyone else has. I’ve had to learn confidence — and relearn it at different stages of my life.

I’m also a bit of a homebody. Give me my dogs, a good meal, a comfortable pair of sweats and a quiet night at home, and I’m pretty happy. That usually surprises people who only know the larger-than-life version of me from television or social media.

Ice may have been the character people met first, but Lori has always been the person underneath.
