Today we’d like to introduce you to Asha Nemani.
Hi Asha, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
From One Question to a Cultural Mission: The Story of “Saree Pleats and Traditions”
Saree Pleats and Traditions is a home-based business bringing ease, artistry, and cultural connection to the experience of wearing a saree. Through professional pre-pleating, draping, and bridal styling, the business helps women celebrate life’s meaningful occasions with confidence, comfort, and pride.
As a mother, I felt incredibly proud when my daughter chose to wear a saree for her high school graduation and shared that she hoped to wear one again for her college graduation. Her pride in our culture inspired me deeply.
She then asked me a simple but meaningful question: “Mom, how am I going to drape a saree when you are not around?” Her question made me consider the challenges she might face when wearing this traditional attire independently in the future.
A few weeks later, I traveled to India for a family wedding. While there, a friend recommended having my sarees pre-pleated, explaining that she relied on the service for every event because it made draping quick and effortless. Curious to experience the difference myself, I decided to try it.
A saree—a six- or nine-yard garment worn in distinctive regional styles across South Asian communities—can be both timeless and intricate. Once part of everyday life for many women, it is now often reserved for weddings, ceremonies, festivals, and other special occasions. For those unfamiliar with the technique, its length and structure can make draping feel complex and time-consuming.
Pre-pleating removes much of the stress and complexity by preparing the saree so it is nearly ready to wear. The shoulder and center pleats are carefully arranged and secured, making the final draping process simple and significantly less time-consuming.
I had two sarees pre-pleated for the wedding and was amazed that I could drape each one in under two minutes. The fit was secure, flattering, and comfortable.
That experience gave me the answer to my daughter’s question. I wanted to learn the art of pre-pleating so she could wear a saree confidently even when I was not there to help. When I shared the idea with my mother-in-law, she immediately encouraged me to pursue professional training and generously supported that next step.
Over the next several days, I trained with experts in Hyderabad, India, learning professional saree pre-pleating and draping techniques. This specialized skill allowed me to address a meaningful need in my community. I realized that if my daughter needed support, many other young women likely did as well.
That realization inspired me to launch a small home-based business rooted in a clear purpose: preserving Indian traditions and the cultural artistry of saree draping. I named it Saree Pleats and Traditions and developed a visual identity inspired by the colors of the Indian flag, honoring the many regional draping traditions found throughout India.
I have always loved wearing sarees for important occasions and traditional celebrations. Yet while working full time in the United States, raising young children, and managing frequent work travel in our family, I often found that draping a saree required more time and flexibility than I had. I did not begin wearing sarees regularly again until my children reached middle school—an experience that later helped me understand why so many women need convenient draping support.
As my work grew, I discovered how widely this challenge was shared. Young mothers often had limited time; older women could find it difficult to stretch or hold pleats; busy professionals wanted the elegance of a saree without the lengthy preparation; and women returning to the tradition after many years sometimes lacked confidence in draping it independently. I also saw how much young women, teenagers, and brides valued support that allowed them to carry the tradition forward.
Throughout this journey, I also came to recognize the valuable role draping services play in cross-cultural weddings. Whether a bride is honoring her own Indian heritage or wearing a saree for the first time as part of her partner’s traditions, thoughtful guidance can make the experience comfortable, stress-free, meaningful, and memorable.
I feel fortunate to serve women of all ages who need a little assistance to wear sarees more often, preserve a cherished tradition, or experience it for the first time on their wedding day.
I am deeply grateful to the family and friends who made this journey possible: my daughter, whose meaningful question inspired the idea; the friend who introduced me to pre-pleating; my mother-in-law, who encouraged my training; my mother, who is always willing to help; and my husband, who supports me as I serve brides and clients at their most important celebrations.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has been a rewarding journey, but not always a smooth one. One of the biggest challenges has been balancing a full-time career, family responsibilities, and a growing home-based business. Building awareness, earning clients’ trust, and maintaining consistent quality—especially for weddings and other meaningful occasions—also required patience and dedication. Every saree and client is different, so I had to continually refine my techniques and learn how to meet a wide range of needs. These challenges have helped me grow more confident, adaptable, and committed to preserving this beautiful tradition while making it easier for others to enjoy.
