Rising Stars: Meet Turru of Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Turru.

Hi Turru, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My background began in contemporary art, initially focusing on digital media. This taught me to value the freedom that comes with experimentation and ultimately shaped the way I approach art production to this day.

From there, my career developed quite organically, giving me the opportunity to explore different roles within the arts. I’ve worked as a curator, writer, and project coordinator within an international art collaboration network, while simultaneously developing my own creative practice as an artist.

In Mexico, I received a federal arts-stimulus grant to create an experimental queer documentary. I’ve also produced photography, painting, design, and illustration for the private art market. Alongside this, I’ve worked across academic and professional contexts, self-published two books, and experimented with installation, animation, interactive systems, video, and other mixed media for international art exhibitions.

More recently, I’ve been exploring other creative fields, including modeling, entertainment, and music. I find these fields fascinating, particularly because they offer different creative ways to engage with ideas, people, and forms of expression.

What connects all of these experiences is my curiosity and my interest in finding new ways to create, collaborate, and communicate ideas, while always staying true to myself, my community, and the ways my work reflects on the themes I find relevant to discuss.

My career has never been completely linear, but that has allowed me to develop a highly adaptable and multidisciplinary approach to creative work. It has also given me the freedom to express myself through different mediums, explore new perspectives, and connect with people in meaningful ways.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road, but I think that’s also been part of the learning process. One of the biggest challenges has been navigating a professional field where opportunities can sometimes be limited or take time to develop, and where building a sustainable career often requires a lot of persistence and adaptability.

At the same time, I’ve been fortunate to be part of a large and diverse artistic community. There have always been opportunities to connect with other artists, curators, and creative professionals, and to build genuine friendships along the way. Many of these connections have led to new collaborations and unexpected opportunities.

So, while my path hasn’t always been straightforward, I’ve learned to stay open, keep creating, and make the most of the relationships and opportunities that come my way, always approaching them with sincerity and an open heart.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My work is rooted in contemporary art, but I’ve always been interested in moving beyond a single medium or discipline. I work across visual art, film, sound art, writing, music, and creative technology, and I’ve also worked as a curator (most recently in Buenos Aires, Argentina) as well as a producer and coordinator for a digital art program and an international art collaboration network called INTAC, involving countries such as Canada, South Korea, Germany, Finland, China, and Mexico. Rather than specializing in one particular medium, I’d say I specialize in developing ideas and finding the right medium or format to bring them to life.

Some of the projects I’m most proud of include my queer fantasy novel, Little Pieces of Autumn, and an experimental queer documentary created for the Ministry of Culture of the State of San Luis Potosí in Mexico. Both allowed me to explore my identity, reflect on personal and collective experiences, and engage with the struggles of the queer community in different contexts through storytelling and experimentation.

I’m also particularly excited about what I’m working on now: developing a music project and an app designed for the queer community. They’re very different projects, but both reflect my interest in combining creativity, technology, and meaningful forms of expression to engage with my community and the world around me.

I think what sets me apart is that I’m naturally multidisciplinary and curious. I’m comfortable moving between artistic, conceptual, organizational, and technological roles, and I enjoy learning as I go. For me, the medium is secondary to the idea, I’m interested in finding new ways to communicate something and creating experiences that people can connect with.

I also believe it’s extremely important, as an artist and creative in general, to be sincere and honest in the way our ideas, and what we create from them, reach and engage with others. I care about how we connect with the world around us, how our work can reflect on the realities we live in and make them visible, and how we can give back and understand our role within society.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I think one of the qualities that has been most important to my success is being genuinely open and receptive to new ideas, different perspectives, and the people I meet along the way. I value genuine connections and try to really listen and understand the context I’m working within before deciding how I want to approach something.

Curiosity is also a big part of how I work. I like to explore, experiment, and learn through the process, even when I don’t necessarily know where an idea will lead. At the same time, I try to remain honest in my creative work. I want what I make to genuinely reflect what I’m thinking, feeling, and experiencing at a particular moment, rather than simply following what is trending or what I think might be more interesting to others.

For me, staying curious while remaining true to myself has been a really important balance. It allows me to be influenced by the world and by other people without losing my own voice.
