Today we’d like to introduce you to Britney Li.
Hi Britney, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve been drawing for as long as I can remember. Like a lot of kids who got started, I was heavily inspired by anime and cartoons. I kept drawing as mostly a hobby, all throughout my adolescence until senior year of high school. At this time of the year, if not decided years prior, people were questioning what colleges everyone wanted to go to. Up until then, I had never really considered art as a real pathway I could take. Through a bit of trial and error I was accepted into Art Center College of Design at 19 years old where I would study Illustration. As of today I’m nearly finished with my time here, (I graduate this December!) I owe the school a lot of gratitude. I have made so many meaningful connections and life long friends.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I think it could’ve always been worse. Although things never really fall in line exactly as planned, they happen for a reason. For starters, when I first applied to school I was rejected, and rightfully devastated. I was pushed and tested in my classes in ways I had never been before in my life. I lost friends, then made many more! I had doubts about myself as an artist (still do) and as a human. But I would say although my path wasn’t super smooth, I’m quite satisfied with where it has led me and am excited for all that will come in the future!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m an Illustrator and Visual Development artist currently located in Pasadena. I also table at conventions and art markets on the side as of right now, but would love to make it full time soon.
I’m most proud of my ability to convey a story and feeling. To be able to express what’s in my head directly to others is what art is all about. I enjoy employing color to evoke nostalgia and a nice cozy vibes to my pieces. I would like to think kindness is the strongest weapon one can have in life. It might not necessarily be seen within my art, but I believe as an artist and human it sets me apart.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
I gotta give a shoutout to Pinterest. In every piece or product I’ve made she has been at the scene of the crime. I would also like to mention Warrior Art Camp. (specifically Austen Marr!)
