Meet Theresa & Seth Harding of Sherman Oaks

Today we’d like to introduce you to Theresa & Seth Harding.

Hi Theresa & Seth, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Seth’s journey started from the Midwest on his way over to pursue a career in the entertainment industry. He was later introduced to the world of clowning and was hooked! He later introduced it to Theresa, (who had a real fear for clowns by the way) and the two found their passion for corporate and private party entertainment! As a clown, one of the many talents you learn is balloon twisting… after briefly clowning around, Theresa and Seth decided that they wanted to solely focus on the artistry of balloons and thus, Madcap Balloons was born 14 years ago this October.

As of today, their home-based business has grown into a separate studio space where they have expanded to Balloon Decor with large installations, deliveries, and activations for all types of events from private parties, branding shoots, and large corporate events. They have also built a small (but mighty) team to assist in numerous events. They primarily focus on the Los Angeles region, but their services have been requested from San Diego to Santa Barbara. To Seattle all the way to Virginia! Clients from all over trust their work and years of experience to handle all types of events.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Not at all.

The last time Seth and Theresa were interviewed with Voyage LA was back in February 2020. They hit a big struggle the following month. Covid was most definitely a challenging time for us. With social distance and the end of gatherings. There was a moment of questioning whether they can truly continue to pursue this business. As celebrations were put on a pause. Luckily, they were able to pivot and focus on safely engaging in outdoor installations and bring joy to backyard birthdays, outdoor graduations, and making fun designs for our neighborhood.

It truly was a tricky time, struggling to acquire a simple round white balloon was at one point difficult, because there was a shortage for balloon distributors as they were also on hold for production. No one could anticipate not being able to buy balloons! Luckily, being creative in their problem-solving, they were able to fulfill orders and find ways to bring a sense of appreciation and celebration during the pandemic period.

Currently as a business, they are navigating the rising costs of products and gas currently. All businesses are struggling with these items. Despite the challenges, it has been heartwarming to have longstanding clients be so understanding. Grateful to have customers who understand the value of work we continue to deliver despite obstacles. Madcap Balloon is always looking to continue acquiring business and balloon knowledge through educational conventions and classes.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Madcap Balloons’ story is, at its core, a love story — one part Midwest entertainer chasing a dream, one-part elementary teacher/social worker HR Manager, who “married a clown,” and together built one of Southern California’s most joyful, imaginative balloon-art companies.

Seth loves that entertaining is still present in this line of work. Theresa appreciates still being around children. Both love the fact that Joy is the ultimate results of their working together. Seeing folks of all ages being present in the special moments is itself the greatest reward.

The philosophy for Madcap Balloons is to celebrate everything. Seth is a two-time cancer survivor, and the perspective that we live in the present, each day, is truly a gift. They find a lot of joy with the group they have built over the years. There are family members part of the team, siblings who twist balloons, and new members who have become part of the balloon family. People even may see “Father Theresa” running around with a column or arch. The team knows the importance of family gathering and it is an honor that you would trust them for your event. Whether you are looking for luxury, elegant, whimsy, fun, bright, or custom styles… Madcap Balloons is honored to be a part of the festivities.

This is not your just any family business, we are trained, licensed and insured with over 40 years of experience within the team. To a cozy private event or a giant corporate event, the Madcap team is here to bring your vision to life. Because your event should be filled with treasured, vivid, and sentimental memories, and that is the type of nostalgia that we aim for any occasion. With either Balloon Twisting or Balloon Décor…the team is ready to celebrate with you!

Life is a party…be sure you have balloons!

Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
Theresa’s favorite book is John Maxwell’s Failing Forward. This has provided the mindset for her positivity. New book that she and Seth have really enjoyed recently is The Let Them Theory from Mel Robbins. Mindset for any business owner is so important! Authors they love to revisit are: Zig Ziglar, Jim Rohn, and Dale Carniege.

When Seth and Theresa are not listening to Mel Robbins. You can find them listening to the Quote of the Day Show, Jay Shetty’s On Purpose, or the Daily Prayers Podcast. Words of positivity and learning is very important to the team.

A new podcast they are enjoying is the That was Us Podcast. The TV show This is Us, is one of their favorites! Thrilled to hear backstory and behind the scenes. The joy and tears when listening inspires them to bring meaningful work to their projects.
