Today we’d like to introduce you to Alberto Meza.
Hi Alberto, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
# Dr. Alberto Meza: Building Smiles, Bridging Borders
**By the time Dr. Alberto Meza welcomes a patient from Los Angeles, Chicago, or New York into his clinic in Costa Rica, the relationship has often been months in the making.** It begins with trust—a video consultation, a conversation about hopes and fears, and the promise that restoring a smile can also restore confidence.
For Dr. Meza, dentistry has never been just about teeth. It is about changing lives.
That philosophy has shaped a career spanning more than three decades and has helped establish Meza Dental Care as one of Latin America’s leading destinations for international dental care.
But the journey started long before the first international patient walked through his doors.
## A Legacy Five Generations in the Making
Dentistry has been part of Dr. Meza’s family for five generations. Growing up in Costa Rica, he was surrounded by conversations about patient care, ethics, and craftsmanship. Watching his predecessors practice taught him that technical excellence alone was never enough. The true measure of a dentist was the trust earned from every patient.
After graduating from the University of Costa Rica in 1996 with a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree, he knew he wanted to honor that family legacy—but he also wanted to redefine what it could become.
## Two Experiences That Changed Everything
Two experiences would quietly shape the future of his career.
As a teenager, Dr. Meza spent a year as an exchange student in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Living with an American family gave him much more than fluency in English. It gave him an understanding of American culture, values, and expectations—an understanding that would later become invaluable when caring for patients traveling from the United States.
Years later, while attending dental school, he worked as a tour guide throughout Costa Rica. Every day he watched visitors fall in love with the country’s natural beauty and hospitality. It sparked a simple but powerful question:
**What if people could come to Costa Rica not only for vacation, but to receive world-class healthcare?**
At the time, medical tourism was barely on anyone’s radar.
For Dr. Meza, it became a vision.
## Betting on an Idea Before the World Was Ready
In 2002, when most dental practices had little or no online presence, Dr. Meza and his brother launched a website specifically designed for international patients.
Many people thought the idea was unrealistic.
Why would someone fly to another country for dental care?
The answer arrived in 2004, when the clinic welcomed its first international patient.
That single case became the beginning of a transformation.
Today, thousands of patients—primarily from the United States and Canada—have traveled to Costa Rica to receive treatment from Dr. Meza and his team, often saving significantly while receiving comprehensive care delivered under internationally recognized standards.
## Never Stop Learning
As his practice grew, Dr. Meza understood that reputation could never depend solely on experience. Excellence requires continuous education.
He completed advanced postgraduate training in Cosmetic Dentistry and Implant Dentistry at UCLA, studying with internationally respected clinicians and refining techniques that combined aesthetics, function, and long-term predictability.
His pursuit of excellence culminated in earning accreditation from the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD), one of the profession’s most rigorous credentials. Worldwide, only a small number of dentists have achieved this distinction, reflecting years of clinical documentation, peer review, and demanding examinations.
For Dr. Meza, however, the accreditation was never about prestige.
“It was about giving every patient confidence that they were receiving care held to the highest international standards.”
## Redefining the Patient Experience
As an entrepreneur, Dr. Meza realized that exceptional clinical work alone would not define success in dental tourism.
Patients traveling internationally need something equally important: certainty.
His answer was to build an entirely different kind of dental practice.
Patients receive assistance long before they arrive—coordinating travel, accommodations, transportation, treatment planning, and ongoing communication. Every detail is designed to reduce uncertainty so patients can focus on their health instead of logistics.
The result is an experience that feels less like traveling for healthcare and more like being welcomed by family.
## The Most Powerful Marketing Strategy
After more than twenty years serving international patients, Dr. Meza has learned an important lesson about business.
Advertising may introduce a company.
Trust builds one.
The vast majority of his patients come through referrals from friends and family members who have experienced the transformation themselves.
For him, that is the greatest professional achievement—not awards, not technology, and not growth, but earning the confidence of people who are willing to recommend his care to those they love most.
## Looking Beyond Dentistry
Today, Dr. Alberto Meza continues to combine clinical excellence with entrepreneurial innovation while advocating for the growth of medical tourism throughout Latin America.
He regularly shares his experience with healthcare organizations, universities, and professional associations, encouraging clinicians to think beyond procedures and focus on creating extraordinary patient experiences.
His vision has always extended beyond restoring smiles.
It is about building trust across borders, changing perceptions of international healthcare, and proving that world-class dentistry is defined not by geography, but by excellence, integrity, and compassion.
For Dr. Meza, every restored smile tells a story.
His own is still being written.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The Defining Test
Every entrepreneur eventually faces a moment that tests not only their business model, but their values.
For Dr. Alberto Meza, that moment arrived in 2020.
When the COVID-19 pandemic brought global travel to a standstill, Costa Rica closed its borders for seven months. Overnight, the flow of international patients—the foundation of his practice—came to a complete halt.
The phones stopped ringing. Treatment rooms sat empty. Yet one responsibility remained unchanged: the livelihoods of the 27 people who had helped build the practice.
Many businesses responded by making deep staffing cuts. Dr. Meza made a different decision.
“I couldn’t imagine rebuilding the practice without the people who had helped create it,” he says. “They weren’t just employees. They were family.”
Supporting a payroll with virtually no international revenue became one of the greatest financial and emotional challenges of his career. It required difficult decisions, personal sacrifice, and an unwavering belief that the crisis would eventually pass.
Looking back, he believes those months reshaped him as a leader.
“They taught me that leadership isn’t measured during periods of growth. It’s measured by the people you choose to stand beside when everything becomes uncertain.”
Rather than allowing the pandemic to define the future of his company, Dr. Meza used it as an opportunity to rethink what came next.
As international travel slowly resumed, he recognized another opportunity: many American patients were increasingly seeking high-quality healthcare closer to home. That realization led to one of the boldest decisions of his career—the expansion of Meza Dental Care into Cancún, Mexico.
Opening a second state-of-the-art facility was more than business growth. It was a strategic evolution of the vision he had pursued since welcoming his first international patient decades earlier: making world-class dentistry more accessible to North American patients while maintaining the same uncompromising standards of clinical excellence and personalized care.
What began as the greatest crisis of his professional life ultimately became the catalyst for the next chapter of his entrepreneurial journey.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a cosmetic and implant dentist, entrepreneur, and the Clinical Director of Meza Dental Care, with practices in Costa Rica and Cancun, Mexico. As a fifth-generation dentist, I grew up believing that dentistry is about much more than restoring teeth—it is about restoring confidence, improving quality of life, and building lasting relationships with patients.
For more than 20 years, I have dedicated my career to treating international patients, primarily from the United States and Canada. Long before dental tourism became widely recognized, I saw the opportunity to combine world-class dentistry with an exceptional patient experience. Today, our practice provides comprehensive cosmetic, restorative, and implant dentistry while guiding patients through every aspect of their journey, from virtual consultations to travel coordination and long-term follow-up care.
I have pursued advanced postgraduate education in Cosmetic Dentistry and Implant Dentistry at UCLA and earned Accreditation with the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD), one of the highest distinctions in aesthetic dentistry. These achievements have never been about titles—they reflect my commitment to providing care that meets the highest international standards.
What I am most proud of, however, is not the number of smiles we have transformed or the awards we have received. It is the trust we have earned. More than 80% of our new patients come through referrals from former patients, their families, and their friends. To me, there is no greater compliment than knowing someone is willing to recommend us to the people they love most.
I am equally proud of the team we have built. During the COVID-19 pandemic, when Costa Rica closed its borders for seven months, our practice faced one of its greatest challenges. With no international patients able to travel, I made the decision to keep supporting the livelihoods of our 27 team members because I believed that people should come before profits. It was an incredibly difficult period, but it reinforced the values that define our organization: loyalty, resilience, and long-term commitment.
That experience also inspired our next chapter. As travel resumed, we expanded into Cancun, Mexico, allowing us to serve even more North American patients while continuing to deliver the same philosophy of personalized, high-quality care.
What sets me apart is that I have never viewed dentistry as a series of procedures. I see it as an opportunity to change lives. Every treatment plan begins by understanding the person behind the smile—their goals, their concerns, and the impact that a healthy smile can have on their confidence and future. I believe that exceptional dentistry combines technical excellence with compassion, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to earning a patient’s trust.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
People often know me as a cosmetic dentist, entrepreneur, or someone passionate about helping patients transform their smiles. What many don’t know is that the most important part of my life has nothing to do with dentistry.
My greatest source of inspiration is my family. My wife, Karla, and our two sons have been my foundation throughout every stage of my career. They are the reason I strive to become a better professional, a better leader, and a better person every day. No matter how busy life becomes, my family is what keeps me grounded and reminds me why I work so hard. Every important decision I’ve made—both personally and professionally—has been driven by the desire to build a meaningful legacy for them.
Outside of dentistry, I’m passionate about fitness and living a healthy lifestyle. I believe taking care of your body is just as important as taking care of your mind, and regular exercise has taught me discipline, resilience, and consistency—qualities that have also shaped my professional life.
Many people are also surprised to learn that I genuinely enjoy cooking. For me, it’s a creative outlet that allows me to unwind and spend quality time with family and friends. Much like dentistry, cooking combines precision, creativity, and attention to detail, and I enjoy the process as much as the final result.
Another passion of mine is fashion. I appreciate timeless style and believe that how we present ourselves reflects the respect we have for the people we meet and the confidence we bring to every interaction. Whether in the clinic or in everyday life, I enjoy expressing my personality through classic, well-crafted clothing.
At the end of the day, while dentistry is my profession, it doesn’t define who I am. I see myself first as a husband, a father, and someone who believes that success is measured not only by what you accomplish professionally, but by the life you build with the people you love.
