Meet Carolyn Hoong of Insight Acupuncture & Wellness Clinic

Today we’d like to introduce you to Carolyn Hoong.

Hi Carolyn, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Hi! My name is Carolyn Hoong. I work as a Licensed Acupuncturist & Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner at Insight Acupuncture & Wellness Clinic in Thousand Oaks, CA.

Being influenced by Hong Kong cinema, music and celebrities, I dreamed of becoming a Hong Kong superstar – singing, dancing, and acting, when I was a little girl. However, as I grew older, I had this knowingness that my calling is to become a healthcare professional and entrepreneur/business owner, combining the two, to help people nourish life and promote longevity.

I took a few turns on my path, but I eventually earned my Master’s in Acupuncture & Traditional Oriental Medicine with honors from Emperor’s College of Traditional Oriental Medicine. After graduating, I successfully passed the California Acupuncture Licensing Exam and became a Licensed Acupuncturist. Dedicated to providing exceptional care and staying abreast of modern science and research backed methods while being rooted in the wisdom and efficacy of time-tested treatments, I passionately pursue a Doctorate in Acupuncture & Traditional Chinese Medicine from Yo San University of Traditional Chinese Medicine and continuing education, for a holistic and integrative approach to healthcare. Both Emperor’s College and Yo San University provide great training. They are the two best universities in Acupuncture & Traditional Asian Medicine in the United States.

After working in a few clinics, I founded Insight Acupuncture & Wellness Clinic in Thousand Oaks, CA.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been a smooth road.

As a minor/teenager in high school and young adult in college, I did not have full control of my own life or everything available to me. Being an immigrant family from Hong Kong and the eldest of four siblings, I was asked to graduate college in four years to help support my three younger siblings through school. Well, there goes my dream of becoming a Western Medical Doctor, I thought.

I had pursued my dream of becoming a Medical Doctor at a young age. I applied to and attended Francisco Bravo M.D. Medical Magnet Senior High School in Los Angeles, CA, and immersed myself in math and science – including biology, chemistry, and physics. I worked at the University of Southern California medical campus in their Pulmonary Institute for two years as a student research assistant researching about hypoxia. These joint partnerships with high schools and universities do great deeds in opening the doors to opportunities and experiences that inner city kids may not have otherwise.

I had initially enrolled at the University of California at San Diego as a Biochemistry major. UCSD is a beautiful campus and makes for rigorous studies. When I learned of the new responsibility asked of me, I started looking for a more lucrative career that could be achieved with a bachelor’s degree. I found it when I attended the job fairs on library walk at UCSD and talked to the various companies that were in attendance. One career path that stood out to me was that of the actuarial sciences, which required one to be good at mathematics. I achieved good grades in mathematics so far, I thought, and embarked on the path of an Applied Mathematics and Management Science double-major. I eventually graduated and worked in the insurance industry as a risk analyst helping to insure commercial properties against natural catastrophes like earthquake, windstorm, and flood; and man-made catastrophes like terrorism.

During the 11 years in the insurance industry, my family members each achieved their American dream. Although working in risk management was intellectually stimulating and provided a lucrative income, I still wanted to fulfill my dream of being a healthcare professional and business owner. Now is my time to achieve my dream, I said to myself. Subsequently, I researched into Acupuncture & Traditional Oriental Medicine universities and enrolled in the four-year full-time Master’s program at Emperor’s College of Traditional Oriental Medicine. Right before that, I had been reading this thick textbook entitled ‘The Foundations of Chinese Medicine’ by Giovanni Maciocia because I had been (and still am) intrigued by this medicine, especially growing up with my maternal grandfather who had practiced this medicine himself. During my entrance interview, the Academic Dean, Dr. Jacques MoraMarco, DAOM, DOM, L.Ac.; and The President, Dr. Yun Kim, DAOM, L.Ac., of Emperor’s College had humorously responded that, “since you are already self-studying this medicine and selected your classes for the first quarter, why don’t we just let you in,” to my delight.

This is how I embarked on my life-long journey in the art and science of Acupuncture & Traditional Oriental Medicine. It is very special in that it includes a holistic approach to healthcare – recognizing the mind, body, and spirit; how we interact with nature, our environment, our world, and our universe; and their patterns. It is both a preventative medicine as well as treatment.

No medicine is a panacea or cure-all. When we can integrate both Western & Eastern Medicines, we can provide more options for the patient, as well as the practitioner, to achieve more positive outcomes from treating illnesses and diseases, nourishing life, and promoting good health and longevity.
