Meet Loren Satterthwaite of Ren Co. in San Luis Obispo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Loren Satterthwaite.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I have always been a creator, I’ve loved the fashion world for as long as I can remember. After high school, deep down I knew what I really wanted to do, but starting a business was never talked about. “You’re supposed to go to college and work for someone, move up the ladder and then retire.” ( a quote all our grandparents tell us) and it may be for most, but it definitely was not for me. I transferred to a school down south for fashion merchandising. In that semester, I was listening to podcasts, reading entrepreneurial books, researching what other successful people were doing. It led me to believe there are other ways to be successful. Next thing I knew, I was packing up my stuff and moving back to my hometown.

I spent a lot of my time in Barnes and Noble, I stumbled across this book about plant dyeing and the rest is history. It was the most interesting concept to me, the results are endless and it’s non-toxic which is everything that I believe in. After playing with it, it grew to be an actual thing. I combined my sewing skills and put the two together. Creating timeless plant dyed home decor pieces is what I do best, and I’m loving the process. I actually just launched my website a few weeks ago! There is still a ton to learn about starting your own business, but it has been so rewarding.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’m not sure anything hard is ever a smooth road. One of my challenges has been staying organizing while juggling many roles throughout Ren Co.

Ren Co. – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Ren Co. is filled with plant dyed goods. I plant dye each piece and hand sew each piece. In the world of fast fashion, my way of doing things may be a little foreign, but I believe it makes each item a treasured piece.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Definitely having so many other girl bosses reaching out to me telling me how amazing my pieces are.
