Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Pomerantz.
Jessica, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Over ten years ago, I started taking pictures early in high school. Myspace was very popular and I was having photoshoots with my friends every day after school. As I got more interested in photography, I realized my high school in New Jersey didn’t offer any photography classes or clubs. During my junior year, I was able to start the Bridgewater Raritan High School Photography club that is still active today! Every meeting, we had different photography lessons and photo critiques for all members, it was so much fun!
I went to Temple University in Philadelphia and studied Business Marketing and Photography. During college and post graduation, I got swept up with business classes and working and my photography work took a major back burner for several years. In the winter of 2015, I started picking up my camera again and realized photography is what I truly loved and how I wanted to spend my time. I moved to Los Angeles February 2016 and tried to work with everyone I could. I started working with small magazines and brands and over time started getting bigger clients. I try to put together large scale editorials with other creatives in Los Angeles as often as I can. I have been published in print over ten times this past year and it’s always a proud moment seeing my work in a magazine.
My life these days are spent running around to different shoots, reaching out to new brands and artists, editing photos, planning my next editorials, and running the operations behind my business.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
My life is a hustle. I went from the stability of a marketing job with a salary to the life of a freelance photographer. Although I am a fashion photographer, I have worked event jobs, taken family photos, and everything in between.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I am a fashion photographer in Los Angeles. I work for different brands, magazines, and artists putting together editorials, campaigns and lookbooks, and press kits. I always want my work to tell a story and evoke emotion for the viewer. I am currently working on a series called, “Girls of the Galaxy” with five different editorials including Mercury, Venus, Mars, Neptune, and the Sun. I am so proud of the teams I have worked with who have helped make my visions come to life. I recently started selling prints on my website and it has been a pleasure expanding my business and seeing my work in people’s homes.
I think I am most known for shooting outdoors and right in the sun. I think the sun is such a beautiful thing that I am constantly in awe of.
What role has luck (good luck or bad luck) played in your life and business?
Looking back to my childhood until this very day, I have been blessed with a life of opportunity and I would consider myself very lucky. I am eternally grateful that I was able to move to Los Angeles and pursue my dreams. If and when bad things happen, I try not to dwell on the negative or think of it as ‘bad luck.’ All I can do is keep moving forward and be better than the person I was yesterday.
