Meet Rebecca Valbuena, Educational Leader in San Gabriel Valley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rebecca Valbuena.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I began my teaching career in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Upon returning to the states in 1990, my hometown of Cleveland (although wonderful in many ways) no longer seemed to be a good fit. I quite literally answered an ad in the Cleveland Plain Dealer stating “California Teachers Needed”. After the hour interview in a hotel conference room, followed by a few signed papers, I was in the car a week later headed for a So Cal city, site unseen. The rest, as they say, is history. Los Angeles, with its constant excitement, diverse student population, culture, and grit is where I was meant to live.

Being a public school teacher in Los Angeles County is certainly unique. Anyone who enters my office is greeted with my Wall of Fame, the collection of framed class pictures from each year that I have taught. These faces are gentle reminders of why I am a teacher. I can think of no greater profession. Children are curious, honest, open-minded and inspiring. Whether questioning the source of rain, explaining grandmother’s migration story, reminding others of the rules for swinging, or informing me of lipstick on my teeth, children make me better for knowing them. They give me a front-row seat from which to witness history being made. No matter how blasé I might have become about the thrill of touching a sea anemone or making ice cream in a plastic bag, I’m elated by their wonder. Looking at the world through the eyes of children makes everything unique, exquisite, and miraculous.

Teaching is a joy and a privilege. It is not just what I do, but who I am. The greatest pleasure of teaching is watching children grow and unfold and knowing that I have helped contribute to their learning. Each day in teaching brings small accomplishments, yet hopefully accomplishments that add up to meaningful contributions to society at large.

In addition to my day-to-day work as a teacher and coach of other teachers, I have also had the opportunity to contribute to my profession as a consultant to national textbook companies, teach future teachers at Cal State Dominguez Hills, write for publications, and speak to others in the profession. Presenting to other teachers gives me great satisfaction, for I hope my enthusiasm is contagious and my message, inspiring. In this era of data overloading and electronic distancing, one should not underestimate the power of personal encounter. Contributing to education by assisting and motivating my colleagues worldwide to provide the best possible education for our children is an honor and it will continue to be a lifetime goal.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Struggles? Every. Day. I think any profession that includes humans is filled with challenges! Now, center that on teaching multi-faced individuals, young and old. Here’s the simple truth: People learn when they are motivated. To motivate others you have to know what works and deliver it in a way that inspires others to put forth effort. Being constantly confident, knowledgable, and energetic on the job is a giant challenge. Staying physically fit, practicing yoga, and keeping a “big picture” perspective are my secrets to success.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Educational Leader story. Tell us more about the business.
I work for the Glendora Unified School District in Glendora, CSU Dominguez Hills in Carson, McGraw Hill Publishing Company remotely, and MPower Fitness Coaching in Chino.

All of these jobs require me to be a teacher or leader in one form or another — I teach teachers best practices in elementary education by modeling and peer coaching, I teach editors and writers what works in terms of pedagogy and curriculum. I teach women how to live healthy, fit lifestyles through weight training, and proper nutrition.

I like to think I specialize in motivating and inspiring others to work toward personal bests in every facet of life.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I’m not sure I believe in luck, but I do believe in karma. Just work hard and be a good person. Period.
