Life & Work with Walter Volpatto of Burbank

Today we’d like to introduce you to Walter Volpatto.

Hi Walter , thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Started as a farmer outside of Turin, Italy!

Did 10 years as Engineer for Broadcast, then worked for DI equipment manufacturer (Quantel) and finally starting to use it, now almost 25 years of Coloring.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Absolutely not! there was no “digital colorist” path in the ’90, with very few exceptions (telecine operator for example), and the machines and equipment was half a million dollars: you cannot have it at home to play with.

Today you can buy a MAC and watch few YouTube video and feel that you’re good to go….

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a Senior Colorist, I work for Cinema and TV exhibitions, throughout the years I learned Color Science, human vision, capturing and display systems and what make a good and exciting image!

In the years I learned how to find and respect the Cinematography and the vison of the talent I work with: everybody can turn the knob, I know why I do it, and when not to do it.

I adapt to the style and vision of the client: capturing the essence of the visual language of the piece, being a commercial, or a Theatrical movie.

What are your plans for the future?
I’m curious in how AI will shape the TV and Movie industry, and I’m looking forward to play with my kids!
