Meet Jessica Allen of Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Allen.

Jessica, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I grew up in the Bay Area, specifically San Jose. From a young age I was always curious about aesthetics. I loved to style hair and play with color, whether it was on my dolls or myself. I began really exploring makeup and all the possibilities that came with it around high school. After a short stint in college, I finally admitted to myself that beauty and cosmetology are where I was happiest. Within 3 years, I attended cosmetology school, found my love for FX makeup, moved to LA, and attended Makeup FX school. It’s now been 8 years since I graduated makeup school and I work as a full time hair and makeup artist for media.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Finding my way to makeup and hair has been a complete rollercoaster. Everytime I thought I knew where I wanted to shift my focus, one door would close, and a new opportunity would present itself. I’ve worked in so many facets of makeup; retail, field marketing, salon, and now freelance. At the end of the day every set back has helped me find my better path.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
As a working makeup artist in LA I do a bit of everything. I’ve worked in retail, field marketing, salon, and freelance. While I love all things beauty, my main passion and focus will always be makeup effects for film and television. I’ve been fortunate enough to work on numerous narrative and commercial projects. One of my favorite jobs I’ve done multiple times are bald caps for commercial work. I love creating realistic, mesmerizing works of art. Whether it’s just a quick bullet wound, or an intricate creature from another world. I recently had the pleasure of department heading my first Super Bowl commercial. It was a hectic, crazy dream come true.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
I, like many others, am hoping to see LA continue to push to bring filming back. Since the pandemic, maintaining consistent work on productions has been incredibly volatile and uncertain for most of Los Angeles, including myself. I’m hoping to see more productions shooting here, and bringing back more of that passion and love that makes LA, LA.
