Today we’d like to introduce you to Jimmy Perez.
Hi Jimmy, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Hi, I’m Jimmy Perez, born and raised in South Los Angeles, California. Growing up wasn’t easy the environment I was in came with a lot of challenges and distractions. But those experiences taught me discipline, resilience, and the importance of building something better for myself.
As I got older, I realized I wanted a different path. I started focusing on developing skills that could create real opportunities, which led me into bookkeeping. I saw how many business owners struggled with their finances, and I knew I could help bring clarity and structure to their operations.
Today, I run my own bookkeeping business, helping clients stay organized, understand their numbers, and make better financial decisions. My goal is not just to manage books, but to take stress off business owners so they can focus on growing their companies.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. One of the biggest challenges has been starting a business from zero no clients, building trust, and learning how to actually sell my services, not just do the work.
I’ve had consultations where potential clients liked what I offered but didn’t want to pay, or didn’t fully understand the value of bookkeeping. That was frustrating at first because I knew I could help them, but it taught me how to communicate value better and be more confident in my pricing.
Another challenge has been balancing everything while working a full-time job. It takes discipline to stay consistent, follow up with leads, create content, and keep improving when results don’t come immediately.
On top of that, I’ve dealt with platforms that didn’t always deliver results, like paying for leads and not seeing a return. But instead of quitting, I’ve used those experiences to adjust my approach and focus on what actually works.
Overall, the challenges have forced me to grow not just as a bookkeeper, but as a business owner. They’ve made me more patient, more strategic, and more determined to build something that lasts.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I work in labor compliance for public works projects in California, where I ensure contractors follow state regulations, including prevailing wage laws, certified payroll reporting, and proper worker classification. My role involves reviewing payroll records, identifying discrepancies, and making sure projects remain compliant with state requirements.
Through this work, I’ve developed a strong attention to detail and a deep understanding of how financial data, payroll, and compliance all connect. I’m known for being thorough, consistent, and someone who can catch issues early before they become costly problems.
At the same time, I run my own bookkeeping business, where I help small business owners stay organized, understand their numbers, and keep their finances accurate. I specialize in cleanups, ongoing bookkeeping, and creating systems that simplify financial management for business owners who don’t have the time or knowledge to manage it themselves.
What I’m most proud of is building something of my own while working full-time and continuously improving my skills. What sets me apart is my combination of compliance knowledge and bookkeeping experience I don’t just record numbers, I understand the rules behind them and help clients stay both organized and compliant.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
One resource I consistently listen to is Yash Qaraah’s spirituality podcast. It gives me a different perspective on discipline, purpose, and understanding life beyond just day-to-day work. It helps me stay grounded and focused mentally.
I also use tools like QuickBooks Online in my bookkeeping work, along with other digital tools that help me stay organized and efficient. I’m always looking for ways to improve my workflow and better serve my clients.
In terms of learning, I pay attention to content around business, personal development, and financial literacy anything that helps me grow both professionally and personally. I believe staying sharp mentally and spiritually plays a big role in performing at a high level in business and life.
