Matias Piegari shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Matias, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
My music! Every time I’m creating a new piece, I can spend hours crafting my ideas.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m a Latin Grammy Award-winning artist, multi-style pianist, keyboardist, composer, music producer, and sound engineer. Throughout my career I’ve explored an astonishing range of musical styles -from classical music and tango to straight jazz, Latin jazz, and all kinds of contemporary fusions- both as a performer and as a composer, always with the enthusiasm I’m known for. In 2013 I relocated to Los Angeles, and since then I’ve been working as a film composer and music producer on a wide variety of projects. In 2021 I won the Latin Grammy for Best Tango Album for my work on the album Tinto Tango Plays Piazzolla.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My parents. From an early age, they noticed my strong inclination toward music. Coming from a family of musicians (both my parents are professional guitarists and college-level music professors) they saw my talent clearly. I was constantly playing every instrument I could get my hands on around the house, and they encouraged that curiosity through fun games. This approach let me explore and create my own sounds freely, without fear of making mistakes
What’s something you changed your mind about after failing hard?
I used to think failure meant I wasn’t good enough. But after failing hard many times throughout my career, I changed my mind completely: failure is actually one of the fastest ways to level up. It forces you to learn about yourself, develop new skills, and find smarter ways to solve problems. Without those hard knocks, I wouldn’t be where I am today.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
I’m deeply committed to staying true to my own musical voice, no matter how long it takes or how unconventional the path might be. I’ve never been drawn to mainstream commercial sounds like pop or reggaeton. instead, my work lives in the intersections of classical music, tango, straight and Latin jazz, orchestral textures, electronics, and various Latin American rhythms. That fusion doesn’t always fit neatly into the typical radio formats or trends, and I’ve had moments where conforming might have opened quicker doors. But I believe real artistry comes from authenticity: creating what genuinely moves me, even if it means a smaller or more niche audience at first. Winning the Latin Grammy for Best Tango Album reinforced that for me; staying committed to my vision led to meaningful recognition without compromising who I am as an artist. So, this belief in artistic integrity is non-negotiable; it’s the foundation of everything I create, and I’ll keep pursuing it for as long as I make music.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope people remember me as someone who loved music so deeply that it poured out of everything I did.
