Today we’d like to introduce you to Porsha Bryant.
Hi Porsha, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My name is Porsha Bryant. I was born and raised out of Los Angeles, California born in the 40s raised out the 60s.. my mother and father Gwen and Herk, you know Tuhlula Da Virgo is a nickname from birth. I was told my daddy named me that it means lady of the house. as I got older. I thought I knew everything fast didn’t listen, which I ended up pregnant at 16 years old, had my son in 17 years old, after having all the help I needed meaning my cousin stayed in the same house as me with my mom so I took a liking to the streets and forgot about my parenting because I had so many cousins who have my back but if I would’ve stayed in the house I wouldn’t have caught no cases I was in and out of jail running around like a chicken with my head cut off. I decided to turn the music my friend maintain took me to the studio where I recorded a song with her. I took a liking to music. It was like writing on a piece of paper. My life story I like this so much I start making my own music and that’s what brought me here today. I was consistent. I kept at it. I lost some real ones along the way, which are my brothers. I had to bury three brothers so just a thought of knowing that I am the oldest now I have to do everything in my power to show the ones under Me good influences good intentions. I can’t be the old person when I’m trying to direct something. New music is where I took a liking music is where I express my feelings my pain, my hurt my happiness. I just got started so y’all put y’all seatbelts on and stay tuned. I have walked on big stages with some of the biggest artists in the world kurupt, Nipsey hussle, Kokane, Ras Kas, Zoe Osama, Dj Quick, Mac 10, WC, Goldie Loc, Trey Dee, Compton AV, Suga Free, Natural Red Diva, God Mother of funk, Crystal DPG, Dogg Pound, Daz, Conrad frm da Ave, Eastside Kboy, DJ Battle Cat, DJ Carisma, DJ Matrix who started marketing my career in music, and a fleet of DJ’s who believed in me Especially Big Fat Rat doing that Concert in Adelanto, Ca at the stadium opened so many doors for me. I know I’ve changed. I didn’t have a choice so here. I am now during the interview with you speaks big volumes. I went from sitting behind the sale to open up for some of the biggest names in the industry and to all my people out there that’s struggling and feel like they don’t have a way or no way out there’s always a light at the end of the darkness. Stay consistent put God first and take care of your family by all means.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No, this music didn’t start Smooth when I started. I was so confused. I didn’t know the slightest thing about music recording. Add Libs doubles any of that. I start doing music to stay out the streets to stay from behind them walls because I was a mother and I had responsibility. It was times I didn’t have money to record. There was times I had a showing and only had one person that showed up for me. I have been scammed. I have had videographers runoff with my content. I have had producers lose files, pass away with my whole project the biggest one yet I lost my brothers in this journey three of them. It hurts like hell, but I have to stay consistent. I have to keep going. I’m a grandmother now of three and I cannot let them see me fall. That’s why it’s always gonna be a time for me to ball out. I wasn’t a rapper when I started. I just took a liking to music. I wasn’t rhyming. I wasn’t doing nursery rhymes or ABC 123. I was really wrapping about my life telling the story things that really go on facts some people hide behind others words, but everything I write is in my handwriting coming from my brain, my pain and my happiness
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Well, I write before I go to the studio because I have so much going on within my day. I have so many titles to attend to so writing is my power.. I record in a studio I would invite friends to vibe out with me majority of the times it be with pain and paper but you can catch me every blue moon just spitting from the top of my head with actual facts that goes on in everyday life, I am known for every time I touch that mic. I’d draw the crowd closer to me. I seen myself reach out to over 1000 people in the crowd, heads moving feet dancing arm, swinging finger snapping to my music. I’m proud of me for just having the heart the willpower to get up on stage and really do it like it’s never been done before in my life. I reached out to so many people with just my lyrics the way I carry myself what sent me apart from another is keeping God first in every aspect, cause I could’ve been sitting behind bars or worse my delivery, my penmanship that’s me.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
Favorite podcast was no Jumper until I seen that. It was too much going on in there too many politics a lot of people ending up hurt dead in jail snitches, and a whole lot of Knigga bitches. My cousin DJ Matrix seen my worth and worked with me day and day out we fell asleep creating things making beats for me and that’s something I would never forget. I will always cherish. He moved up a ladder. I moved up a letter and every time we reach a higher level we never forget about each other. We root for each other. We are the cheerleaders for each other. If it wasn’t for him. I wouldn’t even have a career that’s where I started and we still rocking. My favorite book is Sister Soulja. I don’t like podcasts.
