Daily Inspiration: Meet Caesar Barba-Garcia

Today we’d like to introduce you to Caesar Barba-Garcia.

Hi Caesar, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I came from very humble beginnings in San Jose, California, as a fourth-generation Latino in what many would describe as a broken family. My parents divorced when I was five, and my siblings and I were split up, each of us living with different relatives. My parents weren’t very present due to their own struggles with money, and substances, but in their own way, they tried.

By 15, I was largely on my own, eventually moving in with a friend’s family—five of us sharing a one-bedroom apartment. It wasn’t easy, but we made it work. I had dreams and aspirations of going to college to pursue the arts but out of necessity, I started working in the retail industry.

From 16 to 29, survival was the priority. I worked constantly to make ends meet and even excelled in my field, but over time I realized that stability without fulfillment wasn’t enough. I knew I needed to make a change, even if it meant starting over.

That decision led me to San Antonio, Texas, where I enrolled at Paul Mitchell The School. I went all in, working full-time while attending school full-time and keeping up with coursework and no one to rely on but myself. It was one of the most demanding years of my life, but also one of the most defining. I graduated on the Dean’s List as Salutatorian, prepared to step fully into a new career.

Just as I was on the verge of opening my own salon, my mom was diagnosed with a terminal illness. Within a week, I moved back to San Jose to be with her.

That move led to an unexpected path, I was offered a role as an educator at Paul Mitchell The School in San Jose. For the first time, I found a deeper sense of purpose. Mentoring and guiding the future of our industry, while continuing to work behind the chair, allowed me to grow creatively and professionally. I became part of a community that felt like home, working industry events, styling celebrities, and building a network of artists who inspired me to be better.

After my mom passed, I eventually relocated to Los Angeles, where I continued with Paul Mitchell and learned alongside some of the top national educators in the industry. That experience pushed me to a new level and made me start thinking about what was next.

Post-COVID, I was approached with an opportunity that brought everything full circle—a role with Ulta Beauty as a Services District Educator. It allowed me to combine my retail background, my passion for education, and my work behind the chair. Over the past four and a half years, I’ve grown within the role and have been recognized with multiple awards and accolades for my contributions.

Along the way, I also found fulfillment and love in my personal life. I’m now happily married, a homeowner, and have built a life that reflects not just where I came from, but everything I worked toward and full of joy.

My journey hasn’t been easy or straightforward, but it’s taught me resilience, adaptability, and the importance of betting on yourself—even when the path forward isn’t clear.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Life hasn’t been a smooth road for me. I’ve faced instability from a young age, had to grow up quickly, and spent years navigating survival before I ever had the space to think about fulfillment. There were moments where the path forward felt uncertain, and times when I had to start over completely.

What’s carried me through is a commitment to honesty, integrity, and genuine human connection. Those values have shaped my resilience. I’ve learned to find meaning—even in setbacks—and to see mistakes not as failures, but as opportunities to grow.

I’m not perfect—life is a work in progress—but it’s in those imperfect moments that I’ve found the most growth and the strongest sense of direction.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My role is multifaceted, but two areas define what I do most.

First, I am a mentor and educator. I specialize in developing stylists, barbers, and estheticians at every stage of their careers—both new talent and seasoned professionals as well as business owners in developing the skills to grow a successful salon. My focus is not only technical skill development, but also leadership growth, business acumen, and the ability to build sustainable careers in the beauty industry.

Second, I am a creative and elevated hairstylist. I am passionate about delivering luxury, experience-driven services with a focus on blonding, dimensional color, restorative treatments, and advanced extension work. I strive to create results that are not only visually elevated, but also healthy and customized to each guest.

What I’m most proud of is my ability to bridge both worlds—education and artistry. It allows me to elevate the people I teach while continuing to refine my own craft behind the chair.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
My advice for those who are just starting out is to stay grounded, stay humble, and stay persistent—especially in moments of discomfort. Growth happens when you push beyond what feels familiar.

The more you repeat something, the more natural it becomes. Mastery is built through repetition, patience, and learning from mistakes along the way. Every setback teaches you what to adjust and how to handle the next challenge with more confidence.

Most importantly, don’t lose sight of the joy in what you do. In this industry, your ability to make people feel good about themselves is one of your greatest tools. Take time to connect—talk with people, laugh, and be present in those moments.

Your biggest limitation will rarely be external—it will be the limits you place on yourself. Push through those, and everything else begins to open up.
