Daily Inspiration: Meet Rome Ardell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rome Ardell.

Hi Rome , so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My story starts in Los Angeles, specifically the Westmont area of South Central, where I was raised in an environment surrounded by gang culture and constant pressure to conform. Growing up in that space, it would have been easy to let my surroundings define me, but even at a young age, there was always something in me that resisted becoming a product of that environment. Still, that doesn’t mean the journey was easy. I experienced a lot of ups and downs that shaped who I am today.

One of the most defining moments of my life was losing my father at the age of 17. We had a close relationship, and that loss created a void that was hard to process at such a young age. Around that time, I was already dealing with self-esteem issues and struggling with believing in myself. I found myself caught between two worlds—wanting to follow the right path, while also being influenced by the wrong crowd. I didn’t yet have the leadership mindset I carry today, and at times I fell into the narrative that your environment determines who you are.

That internal battle led me down some unhealthy paths. I dealt with depression, heartbreak, and moments where I turned to alcohol and poor decisions as a way to cope. Looking back, that period of my life represents what I now call “the war against ourselves”—a mental and emotional struggle that many people face but don’t always talk about. For me, that war was rooted in self-doubt and a lack of belief in my own potential.

Despite everything, I was able to push forward. I stayed committed to growth and education, eventually earning three college degrees. That accomplishment represents more than just academics—it symbolizes resilience, discipline, and a refusal to let my circumstances define my outcome. I also had the influence of my older brother, who served as a positive role model and gave me something to look up to during times when I needed direction.

Over time, I began to shift my mindset. I developed a phrase that now defines not only my life, but my message to others: “Stay Certified.” To me, that means believing in yourself even when you don’t feel validated, trusting your worth, and standing firm in who you are. It’s powerful because it came from a place where I once struggled to do exactly that.

My journey into creativity and entrepreneurship began in 2013 when I first started designing clothes. At that time, it was simple—I was putting my nickname, “Jay Rome,” on T-shirts and getting them printed at local shops. It was less about business and more about expression. I didn’t fully understand it then, but that was the foundation of something much bigger.

By 2018, I began to approach things with more intention. I created a concept called H.I.M., which stood for “Haters Inspire Me.” That phase challenged me to think deeper about purpose and message. It helped me realize that what I was building needed to stand for something real, something people could connect with beyond just visuals.

In 2021, everything evolved into what is now Boss Angeles Certified. This brand represents more than fashion—it represents identity, resilience, and self-belief. “Boss Angeles” is a reflection of Los Angeles, the city that raised me, specifically the Vermont Knolls area, and everything that comes with it—the culture, the struggle, the ambition, and the pride. “Certified” speaks to self-validation, the idea that you don’t need permission from the world to believe in who you are.

Today, Boss Angeles Certified is a lifestyle and a mindset. It’s about growth, overcoming adversity, and representing your story with confidence. It’s also about giving back. Recently, I joined a church community and stepped into a role as a youth counselor, which is something I take seriously. Being able to mentor young people, especially those who come from environments similar to mine, means everything to me. I want to be the kind of example that shows them there’s another way, that they can rise above their circumstances and become leaders in their own lives.

When I look at where I started and where I am today, I see a journey defined by transformation. I went from battling self-doubt and external pressures to becoming someone who stands on purpose and encourages others to do the same. My story isn’t just about overcoming—it’s about evolving, and using every experience, good and bad, as fuel to build something meaningful.

At the core of everything I do—whether it’s my writing, my brand, or my mentorship—is one message: believe in yourself, stay grounded in who you are, and always Stay Certified.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road for me. In many ways, my journey has been shaped by loss, internal battles, and learning how to keep moving forward even when life feels heavy.

Losing my father at 17 was one of the most painful moments of my life, especially because we shared a close bond. That alone was enough to shift everything for me, but it wasn’t the only loss I’ve experienced. At just 13 years old, I lost one of my closest childhood friends, Randy, who was also my next-door neighbor. That was my first real experience with grief at a young age, and it stayed with me. As I got older, the losses continued. I lost people who meant a lot to me and played important roles in my life, including my big brother figure, FatBacc, and most recently my brother David last year. Those experiences don’t just pass—they stay with you, and even today, that weight is something I carry.

For a long time, I was battling things internally—grief, self-doubt, and trying to understand why things happened the way they did. There were moments where I could’ve let those struggles pull me backwards mentally and emotionally. But over time, I made a decision that I couldn’t allow my past or my pain to define my future. I had to move forward not just for myself, but for my family and for the people I’ve lost. In a way, everything I do now carries their memory with it. That pain turned into motivation.

Alongside those personal struggles, building something creative came with its own challenges. My journey with fashion and branding wasn’t something that happened overnight. There were times where I struggled to stay inspired and consistent. I would question my ideas, overthink designs, and hit creative walls where it felt like I wasn’t progressing. That’s something people don’t always talk about—how much patience it really takes to build something from nothing.

Another challenge I faced was staying true to my vision in a space where a lot of people were starting brands without a real message behind them. Seeing that actually helped me realize what I didn’t want to be. I never wanted Boss Angeles Certified to just be another logo or trend. It had to stand for something deeper. That forced me to dig within myself and define what my brand truly represents.

And that became the biggest lesson in my journey—staying true to who I am and what I believe in, no matter what. Boss Angeles Certified is built on a real message: self-belief, embracing where you come from, and being “Certified” by yourself without needing validation from anyone else. That message didn’t come from an easy path—it came from overcoming real-life challenges, loss, and moments where I had to rebuild myself mentally.

So no, it hasn’t been a smooth road. But every loss, every setback, and every obstacle gave me a deeper sense of purpose. It taught me resilience, discipline, and how to turn pain into something meaningful. And through it all, I stayed committed to my vision—that’s what kept me going, and that’s what continues to drive me today.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
What I do is bigger than just clothing—I create messages and experiences that people can carry with them in their everyday lives. I’m the creator of Boss Angeles Certified, a brand built on self-belief, resilience, and staying true to where you come from. At its core, my work is about transforming real-life experiences, struggles, and mindset into something tangible—whether that’s through fashion or writing.

What I specialize in is taking authenticity and turning it into something people can connect with on a deeper level. Anybody can design clothes, but not everybody creates with purpose. Every concept I put out is rooted in real-life lessons—things I’ve lived through, battled, and grown from. That’s what allows my work to resonate beyond just appearance. It’s not just something you wear—it’s something you represent.

What I’m known for, and what truly sets me apart, is that Boss Angeles Certified isn’t driven by trends—it’s driven by meaning. The brand reflects Los Angeles, specifically the environment that raised me, and everything that comes with it—the challenges, the culture, the resilience, and the ambition. The word “Certified” is the foundation of it all. It represents self-validation—standing on who you are without needing approval from anyone else. That message is personal to me because I know what it feels like to not always believe in yourself, and I’ve grown into someone who now lives by that mindset daily.

Another thing that separates me is consistency in message across everything I create. I’m not just building a clothing line—I’m building a lifestyle. Recently, I’ve expanded into writing as another way to express that same message on a deeper level. Over the past few months, I’ve been developing multiple books that reflect the same core principles as my brand, just in a more detailed and personal form.

One of my upcoming projects, Stay Certified 365, is centered around daily motivation, discipline, and mindset. It’s designed to help people stay focused, build confidence, and apply self-belief to their everyday routines. It’s not just about inspiration—it’s about consistency and actually living out the message.

Another project, The War Against Ourselves: A Message to Black Men, is a much deeper and more personal body of work. It addresses the internal battles we face—mentally, emotionally, and within our communities. It speaks on accountability, breaking cycles, and learning how to move with purpose instead of self-destruction. That book comes from a real place, and the goal is to encourage growth, unity, and a stronger sense of self within our culture.

What I’m most proud of is that everything I’m building is authentic. It’s not something I created overnight, and it’s not something influenced by what’s trending. It comes from real experiences—loss, growth, setbacks, and overcoming. I’ve taken those moments and turned them into something that can inspire and uplift others.

I’m also proud to be in a position where I can help guide and influence the next generation. As a man, that responsibility means a lot to me. Being able to pour into young people and help them see life from a positive perspective is something I truly stand on. I want them to understand their value early, to believe in themselves, and to know they don’t have to fall into the same cycles or limitations that exist around them. That impact goes beyond business—that’s legacy.

At the end of the day, what sets me apart is that I’m not just creating products—I’m creating purpose. Whether it’s through clothing or writing, my goal is to give people something they can wear, read, and live by. Something that reminds them to believe in themselves, stay grounded in who they are, and move through life with confidence.

Everything I do connects back to one message: stay true, stay disciplined, and always Stay Certified.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
No journey like mine is done alone, and I’m very intentional about acknowledging the people who’ve played a real role in shaping who I am and what I’ve built.

First and foremost, I have to give credit to my mom. She’s been my foundation in every sense of the word. Through every phase of my life—whether I was confident or doubting myself—she never stopped believing in me. She gave me stability, guidance, and unconditional support, even during times when I didn’t fully see my own potential. A lot of my mindset, resilience, and ability to keep pushing forward comes directly from her influence. She set the tone for what it means to stay grounded, stay strong, and keep going regardless of circumstances.

My older brother has also been a major figure in my life. He’s someone I can go to for real, unfiltered advice. He’s always kept it honest with me, and that honesty has helped me stay accountable and focused. When you’re building something, especially from the ground up, it’s easy to get distracted or lose direction. Having someone in your corner who can bring you back to reality and keep you aligned is invaluable, and he’s been that for me.

Another person who deserves recognition is my brother, Doctor Curry. That relationship goes beyond business—we’ve known each other for over 35 years, so there’s history, trust, and a genuine bond there. Now, we’re taking that connection and building something meaningful together with our upcoming Stay Certified podcast. That platform is an extension of everything I stand for—it’s about real conversations, growth, and giving people something they can take with them in their daily lives. Being able to collaborate with someone who truly understands me and shares that vision makes it even more powerful.

I also have to acknowledge my fiancée. She plays a huge role in my journey, not just as support, but as someone who actively pushes me to grow. We challenge each other to be better, and that kind of partnership is important. It’s one thing to have someone who believes in you, but it’s another to have someone who also holds you to a higher standard. That balance has helped me elevate not just in what I do, but in who I am as a man.

Beyond individuals, I’m also grateful for the people who have supported my vision—those who believed in Boss Angeles Certified early on, those who continue to support it now, and those who connect with the message behind it. Whether it’s someone wearing the brand, reading my work, or simply showing love and encouragement, all of that plays a role. It reminds me that what I’m building isn’t just for me—it’s something bigger.

At the end of the day, while I’ve put in the work and stayed committed to my path, the support system around me has been a major part of my growth. Boss Angeles Certified may carry my vision, but it’s been strengthened by the people who’ve stood with me, believed in me, and helped me stay true to who I am. That’s something I’ll always value and never take for granted.
