Inspiring Conversations with Eileen Manoukian of Gem Educare & Gem Parenting Academy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Eileen Manoukian.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
For many years, I worked as a bank manager, and that experience gave me a strong foundation in leadership, responsibility, and working closely with people. Although I was successful in that field, I had always carried a dream of traveling the world. Eventually, I decided to follow that dream and spent a full year traveling solo, which became one of the most transformative chapters of my life.
During that journey, I volunteered in South Africa at an underprivileged child care center. That experience changed me deeply. It was there, while working with the children, that I realized my true calling was to dedicate my life to supporting children and families. What began as travel became a turning point that redirected the course of my life.
After South Africa, I wanted to learn as much as I could about how children are cared for, nurtured, and educated in different parts of the world. I researched and visited child care programs in many countries, and those experiences gave me a much broader perspective on child development and the importance of emotional well-being, connection, and responsive care. They helped shape the philosophy that continues to guide my work today.
When I returned, I made the decision to fully commit to this path. I went back to school and earned my Doctoral degree in Early Childhood Education, which deepened both my academic knowledge and my practical understanding. From there, I built a career centered on child development, emotional intelligence, and family support.
Over the years, through working closely with children and families, I began to recognize a consistent pattern: many parenting challenges were not rooted in a lack of care or effort, but in not having a clear, practical way to respond in real-life moments. That realization led me to develop what I now teach as **the GEM Method™**, a simple, structured approach that helps parents respond with calm, clarity, and effective guidance.
The GEM Method stands for **Ground Yourself, Enter the Child’s World, and Move with Guidance**. It brings together developmental understanding, emotional regulation, and practical communication into a method parents can actually use in everyday situations.
Today, I work as a parent coach, child care provider, author, child development specialist for TV programs, and play therapist, serving children ages 0–12 and their parents. My work is centered on helping families build stronger connections while supporting children’s emotional development in a meaningful and lasting way.
One of my proudest accomplishments has been building Gem Educare, an award-winning child care and preschool program focused on nurturing the whole child through play-based learning, emotional intelligence, and caring relationships. Through that work, I had the privilege of supporting many children and families closely, and it also showed me something very important: if we want to help more children truly thrive, we must also support the parents and caregivers who are raising them.
That realization is what led me to create Gem Parenting Academy. I started it because I wanted to extend my impact beyond one school or one group of families and provide parents with practical, compassionate guidance they can use in everyday life. The GEM Method™ is at the core of this work, giving parents a clear and supportive way to navigate challenges with more confidence.
My mission is to help parents raise emotionally healthy, confident children with more calm, clarity, and confidence, because I truly believe that when we empower parents, we create better outcomes for children, families, and society as a whole.
Looking back, I can see that every chapter of my journey, from banking to solo travel to South Africa to doctoral study to building my own programs, led me exactly where I was meant to be.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not at all. It has been meaningful, but definitely not smooth. Changing careers after many years in banking was a major leap, because it meant leaving behind something stable to follow a calling that felt much more personal and purpose-driven. Building a new path required courage, starting over in many ways, and trusting that I was making the right decision.
One of the biggest challenges was the process of reinventing myself. After realizing my calling, I went back to school, committed to a new profession, and worked to build both the knowledge and the credibility needed to create the kind of impact I envisioned. That required time, discipline, and persistence, especially in moments when the path forward was not always clear.
Another challenge has been that the work I am building is much bigger than a single role. I have had to grow not only as an educator and child development specialist, but also as a business owner, mentor, and creator. There were times when I felt the weight of not having enough time, enough support, or all the skills needed to bring my vision to life as quickly as I wanted. I also had to face internal challenges, including the fear of showing up more publicly and the pressure of completing work that felt deeply meaningful.
Over time, I began to approach these challenges in the same way I now teach parents through the **GEM Method™**—by grounding myself, understanding the situation more deeply, and then moving forward with clarity and intention. That mindset helped me navigate uncertainty with more steadiness and allowed me to continue growing even when things felt overwhelming.
Like many people, I also had to navigate the impact of COVID, which created uncertainty and required a great deal of adaptation. In addition, changes in laws and educational systems affecting young children brought new challenges for those of us working in early childhood education. These shifts required flexibility, reflection, and a willingness to evolve rather than resist change.
At the same time, every challenge brought valuable growth. They strengthened my resilience, sharpened my focus, and deepened my understanding of the work I am committed to. Looking back, I can say the road has not been easy, but each obstacle played a role in shaping both who I am and the work I do today.
Those experiences have ultimately reinforced my commitment to supporting children and families in a way that is both grounded and practical. Because just as children need guidance, adults do as well—and having a clear way to respond, even in difficult moments, can make all the difference.

As you know, we’re big fans of Gem Educare & Gem Parenting Academy. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
My businesses are all built around one central mission: helping children thrive by creating stronger, healthier support systems around them. While each brand serves families in a different way, together they form a connected ecosystem of care, education, and guidance designed to support both children and the adults raising them.
At the core of this ecosystem is a consistent philosophy and approach, which I now teach as the GEM Method™—a simple, structured way of responding to children and guiding families with more calm, clarity, and intention. This method reflects the principles that have shaped my work over the years and is woven throughout each of my businesses in different ways.
Gem Educare is my award-winning child care and preschool program, created to provide a warm, nurturing, and developmentally strong environment where young children can grow emotionally, socially, cognitively, and physically. What sets Gem Educare apart is its whole-child philosophy. The program does not focus only on care or academics in isolation; it intentionally integrates play-based learning, emotional intelligence, structure, and meaningful relationships to help children build confidence, empathy, and a love of learning from the very beginning. In practice, this means children are guided through daily experiences in a way that reflects the principles behind the GEM Method—supporting emotional regulation, connection, and thoughtful guidance in real time. Brand-wise, I am especially proud that Gem Educare has become known for both excellence and heart. Families recognize it as a place where children are truly seen, supported, and nurtured.
Gem Parenting was created to extend that support directly to parents through individualized coaching. It serves expecting parents and parents of children ages 0–12 who are looking for thoughtful, personalized guidance rooted in child development, emotional well-being, and practical day-to-day strategies. What makes Gem Parenting distinct is that it is not built on fear-based advice or rigid formulas. Instead, it helps parents develop a clear, grounded way of responding to their children, which is where the GEM Method becomes especially powerful. Parents learn how to pause, understand what their child is experiencing, and then move forward with guidance that is both calm and effective.
Gem Parenting Academy was then created to bring that same level of support to a broader community of families in a more accessible and ongoing way. It is a membership platform that offers weekly parenting lessons, monthly live coaching, age-based tracks, parenting toolkits, community access, and replays. What sets the Academy apart is the way it blends child development science, emotional intelligence, play-based learning, attachment-informed principles, and real-world experience into one trusted resource for parents. The GEM Method™ serves as a central framework within the Academy, giving families a consistent and practical structure they can return to across different situations and stages of development.
What I want readers to know is that these businesses are not random or separate offerings. They are deeply connected brands built with purpose, intention, and a long-term vision. Each one reflects my commitment to raising the standard of how we care for children and support families. Whether through high-quality early childhood care, one-on-one parent coaching, or a membership-based parenting community, the goal is the same: to help children become emotionally healthy, confident, and independent by giving the adults in their lives a clear, supportive way to guide them.
Ultimately, the work across all three brands is aligned in one direction: helping families move through everyday challenges with more understanding, more connection, and more effective guidance—because when parents feel supported and confident, children are able to truly thrive.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Yes. I believe finding the right mentor or building a strong network starts with being clear about where you want to grow. The most valuable connections are not always the most visible ones. They are often the people whose work, values, and character align with the kind of professional you want to become.

What has worked well for me is staying open to learning, being willing to ask thoughtful questions, and building relationships with sincerity rather than only when I need something. I think people respond well when they can feel that your interest is genuine and that you respect their time and experience. It is also important to be consistent. One meaningful conversation usually does not build a relationship on its own, but staying in touch, showing appreciation, and continuing to grow can.
I also believe that mentorship does not always come in one form. Sometimes it comes through a formal mentor, and sometimes it comes through observing people you admire, learning from different environments, and taking insight from many sources. In my own journey, learning from different programs, experiences, and professional settings helped shape the way I think and the way I built my work. That process of learning from multiple perspectives, including my work with Awareness Integration Theory, influenced the way I later developed the GEM Method™, which reflects a more integrated and responsive approach to working with both children and adults.
My advice would be to seek out people who are not only successful, but also generous, grounded, and aligned with your values. Be professional, be prepared, and be respectful, but do not be afraid to reach out. At the same time, keep investing in your own growth, because the stronger and clearer you become in your purpose, the more naturally the right relationships tend to follow.
Above all, I would say that networking works best when it is rooted in real connection, not performance. When you approach people with authenticity, clarity, and a willingness to learn, those relationships tend to become much more meaningful and lasting.
