Today we’d like to introduce you to Breyonna Grant.
Hi Breyonna, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
It’s safe to say I’ve always known I wanted to do it big. Being from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, I had never seen anyone with a career trajectory that I envisioned for myself or felt I could follow. From a young age, I knew I would have to carve out my own path to pursue my dreams of being a part of the hip-hop and entertainment media industry.
I officially started my journey in media through college radio, where I, along with my co-host Camren “CamUniverse” Linson, created and hosted a weekly show that amassed 30,000 regular viewers. During that time, I truly found my voice. As the media industry began evolving rapidly, my passion project transitioned into a visual podcast—and that’s when it clicked for me that this was bigger than a hobby; it was my endgame.
After graduating, I took a leap of faith and moved across the country from Louisiana to Los Angeles. My co-host and I were selected for the first cohort of the Next Gem Femme mentorship program powered by Femme It Forward, and that opportunity gave me the push I needed to take the risk. It wasn’t an ideal time because COVID had just ended, the writers’ strike had begun, and there were constant headlines about layoffs—but despite all of that, I knew I was exactly where I needed to be.
Along the way, I’ve worked in communications for a concert series, produced original content for media conglomerates, and had the opportunity to work with some of my favorite artists. A major highlight came last year when I began my journey at BET in communications—it was a true full-circle moment. Ten years earlier, I had the chance to work the BET Awards while still based in Baton Rouge, but at the time, it felt impossible to nurture the connections I was making. It felt like the moment had come and gone, but I’ve learned that everything comes back around, especially when you’re ready.
This year, I rebranded my media company into Rhythm & Rouge, a digital media platform centered around hip-hop culture, current events, and real, on-the-ground storytelling. I didn’t have everything figured out, but I had a vision, consistency, and faith in what God placed on my heart. Since then, I’ve been able to work both behind the scenes and on camera at major events, create original content, and build something that truly reflects the culture and community I come from.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. There’s been many moments where things didn’t go as planned, and I had to figure it out in real time. Moving to Los Angeles alone was a huge transition. Leaving behind everything familiar and stepping into an industry that is unpredictable is a risk in itself.
I’ve experienced seasons of inconsistency, especially being self-employed, where income wasn’t always stable and opportunities didn’t come as quickly as I hoped. There were moments where I questioned if I was on the right path or if I was doing enough.
I also had to learn how to navigate spaces where I didn’t always see people who looked like me or had a similar story. Although it was a challenge, juggling my new life while staying true to who I am at my core has remained a top priority for me.
But more than anything, the biggest challenge has been learning to trust the timing of my journey. Things haven’t always happened when I wanted them to, but they’ve always happened exactly when I needed them to. My faith has carried me through those uncertain moments and reminded me that every delay, every setback, and every redirection was shaping me for something greater!
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I work in communications as a storyteller, producer, and media personality. My focus is centered around media production, cultural coverage, and creating real-time, on-the-ground content that captures the energy of the culture as it’s happening.
Through my platform, Rhythm & Rouge, I specialize in covering hip-hop culture, current events, and entertainment’s biggest moments in a way that is authentic, conversational, and community-driven. I’m known for my ability to connect with people, whether I’m in front of the camera hosting, conducting interviews, or behind the scenes producing content and shaping narratives.
What I’m most proud of is building something from the ground up that reflects my voice and my perspective. I didn’t wait for a traditional lane or job in the industry to open up for me — I created my own.
What sets me apart is my ability to blend production with personality. I understand both sides of media, the execution and the storytelling, and I move with intention in both. I don’t just report on culture, I’m immersed in it everyday.
How do you think about happiness?
What makes me happy is being in spaces where I feel aligned, creative, and at peace. Seeing myself evolve, watching my vision expand, and realizing that the things I once prayed for are unfolding in real time.
I also find a lot of joy in the simple things: being around people I love, a good DJ, nice views, perfectly timed memes, discovering new music, my nieces & nephews, a good sermon, happy hour & traveling to environments that inspire me creatively.
