Today we’d like to introduce you to Lucia O’Cleary.
Hi Lucia, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I believe I’ve been an artist since I was a child. In fact, I sold my very first drawing at just six years old to a local radio station! My journey has always felt like a series of layers—much like the “parfait” analogy from Shrek. You know the line: “Onions have layers. Parfaits have layers.” Each layer has added something new to my path as a multidisciplinary artist. Looking back at how it all started—from designing an image in first grade to be sewn onto a class quilt to raise money for our Disneyland field trip—I feel incredibly fortunate to be where I am today.
The Foundation: Creative Roots & Collaboration
The professional “layer” of this story began around 2021 in Downtown Ontario. My sister-in-law sent me an Instagram post about a call for artists from a local nonprofit in Downtown Ontario, California, and I decided to just go for it. That is how my very good friend Nicolle and I met.
From there, I started with digital art and design, and we eventually built a partnership where I handled the photography and footage while she tackled the editing. We were just two friends navigating the steep learning curve of business development and social media, learning as we went.
The Community Layer: Finding a Voice
As we grew, I moved into the heartbeat of our local scene through Art Walks. This was a pivotal time for me because it wasn’t just about showing my art; it was about helping local businesses with their branding and marketing. It taught me how to balance “art for art’s sake” with the practical, strategic needs of a growing community.
The Recognition Layer: A Full-Circle Moment
One of the most exciting—and humbling—parts of this journey was seeing my work move from the streets into curated gallery spaces. I began working with museums in Chino Hills and was even part of the “Made in LA” show.
But the absolute highlight was having my work displayed at the Ontario Museum of History & Art. In another beautiful twist of fate, I only knew about the opportunity because a childhood friend of my sister sent me the Instagram post. It was a true “pinch-me” moment. I used to go there on walking field trips as a little kid, so seeing my own art on those same walls was an honor that felt surreal. It was the ultimate way to honor my roots.
The Expansion Layer: Beyond the Lens
Today, photography and art have opened doors I never dreamed of. I’ve transitioned from being the person behind the lens to being invited to podcasts and interviews to share my story. I’m so grateful for every opportunity that has come my way. Every project has been a chance to learn and connect, and I’m just excited to see what the next “layer” of this journey holds.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Looking back at the obstacles I’ve faced, I’ve realized that the road is rarely smooth—but the friction is exactly what creates the growth. My journey has been a constant lesson in appreciating the “now” and navigating the duality of every challenge.
The Duality of Perspective
In this industry, you’re constantly faced with a choice: do you see your environment as an obstacle or an opportunity?
The Investment: I’ve learned that both perspectives require an immense investment of time and energy—which are our most precious currencies.
The Shift: The struggle hasn’t just been about the external hurdles; it’s been about the internal discipline to invest my “currency” on growth rather than frustration. It’s an exciting challenge to wake up and decide to see a “no” as a “a creative yes” or a redirection toward something better.
Courage, Bravery, and a Little “Delusion”
One of the hardest parts of this path is the sheer vulnerability of putting yourself out there. To get from a small non-profit call-to-artists to a museum gallery, I had to embrace a mix of courage, bravery, and—honestly—a little bit of delusion. * The Risk: You have to be “delusional” enough to believe in your vision before anyone else does.
The Growth: The fear of rejection is always there, but I’ve learned to treat it as a prerequisite for expansion. If I’m not being rejected occasionally, I’m probably not dreaming big enough!
The Price of the Path
Ultimately, I’ve found that staying deeply connected to who I am is what prepares me for both failure and success.
The Balance: Both paths come with a price. Failure costs you your pride, but success costs you your comfort zone.
It hasn’t always been easy, but that’s what makes the milestones—like seeing my work in the same museum I visited as a kid—feel so incredibly rewarding. I’m just humbled to be in a position where I can turn those struggles into art and keep moving forward with a grateful heart.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
What I Do & My Specialties
I am a multidisciplinary artist, but if I’m being honest, I think of my specialty as “soul-level observation.” While my technical focus is on documentary-style photography and brand storytelling, what I’m actually doing is stepping into an environment as a quiet observer. I love the thrill of documenting life exactly as it unfolds—no performance, no artifice—just the raw, beautiful truth of the moment.
What I’m Known For
In a world that can feel so loud and exposed, I’m incredibly honored to be known for creating a “sacred space.” My clients often tell me they feel a profound sense of safety and honor during our sessions. I’ve realized I’m not just delivering a gallery of images; I’m creating a time capsule of emotion. It’s so exciting to capture a feeling that stays in someone’s heart long after the shutter clicks.
What I Am Most Proud Of
While seeing my work in galleries and museums is a dream come true, what truly humbles me is the community I share space with. My greatest pride comes from being a mirror for my fellow artists and clients—reminding them of the divinity they already possess. There is nothing more rewarding than facilitating that “remembering” that we, too, are nature, art, and the divine.
What Sets Me Apart
I believe what sets my work apart is that I don’t see a photoshoot as a transaction; I see it as a lifetime of connection. While the technical “perfect shot” is important, I’m much more interested in the sacred invitation I’ve been given to witness your life. It’s a vulnerable, brave way to create, but it allows me to capture a raw essence that feels like a shared heartbeat between the subject, the community, and the lens.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
The Power of Connection
This journey is a beautiful opportunity for us to collaborate. In fact, I am only able to share this space with you today because of a connection I made with a fellow artist whom I deeply admire. A huge thank you to Linda—our connection is living proof of how community is built through integrity and mutual respect.
I’m also incredibly honored to thank VoyageLA for providing this space for all of us to connect. It is a privilege to be part of a platform that celebrates our stories.
I’ve partnered with incredible artists I’ve met on Instagram and in person simply by being present at art walks, museums, and photo meets. If my story resonates with you, I’m always open to connecting.
Finding Your Breakthrough
If you’re looking to align your actions with a new sense of purpose, my biggest piece of advice is to simply see what your local community has to offer. It’s exciting to realize that your next big breakthrough is often just a neighborhood meet-up or a local event away! It’s all about taking one step at a time and building a solid foundation. Whether you’re visiting a local shop or diving into articles, the possibilities for connection are truly endless.
A Universal Mindset
Keep in mind that this mindset applies to any interest. Whether you are drawn to photography, coding, gardening, or entrepreneurship, the path to growth remains the same.
For those moving into intermediate and advanced stages, lifestyle coaches are also an incredible option. Sometimes, having a guide to help you navigate the duality of your journey is the most cost- and time-effective move you can make. It’s about aligning your actions with your purpose so you don’t waste your “currency” on trials that don’t serve your ultimate vision.
Start Where You Are
Looking back at my own story, I’m humbled by how it all began—just some friends, art walks, and local galleries. I’ve learned that every shared conversation is an opportunity to learn. We live in a world of ubiquitous information; you can start with something as simple as a YouTube search for someone you admire or by reaching out to a close friend.
Don’t overlook the power of larger networks, either! Attending Adobe meetups in LA was a life-changing experience for me. I highly recommend keeping an eye on Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube, or doing a quick search for events in your area.
The Key is Exploration
From major tech events to “hidden gems” like local libraries, museums, and community colleges—the key is to just start exploring. It’s a brave thing to put yourself out there, but every resource is a tool to help you find your voice. I am so excited to see where your journey takes you!
