Today we’d like to introduce you to Monica Tyson.
Hi Monica , thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My name is Monica Tyson, and I opened my own estate sale business in my early twenties. I’m proud to say that I was the youngest person to start an estate sale company in Southern California. My very first estate sale was for Hollywood legend Leslie Nielsen, followed by one at Shirley Temple’s home in Santa Monica—an incredible way to begin my journey.
I’ve always had a passion for antiques, art, and unique collectibles. As a child, I would accompany my mom to flea markets and swap meets, and I quickly developed an eye for interesting pieces. After high school, I began selling Native American jewelry and vintage clothing at local markets, which ultimately led me to discover estate sales. The first one I attended completely blew me away—it was unlike anything I had ever experienced.
Estate sales are exciting, mind-opening, and above all, humbling. Walking through someone’s life, handling their belongings, and sharing their story is a profound responsibility. It can feel strange at times, yet also deeply right. When someone purchases an item, I know it will be cherished, whether it remains a personal treasure or eventually finds a new home where it is honored.
For me, every sale is personal. When a family entrusts me to manage their estate, it’s more than just a business transaction—it’s a meaningful experience. I feel privileged to help preserve their legacy while connecting buyers with items that carry history, meaning, and beauty.
Over the years, my work has allowed me to combine my love for history, art, and storytelling with entrepreneurship, and I feel incredibly grateful to share these experiences with every family and collector I meet.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Owning and operating a business from the ground up is never a smooth road. At first, the path is rough, but with time, experience, and hard work, it gradually smooths out. Along the way, I’ve learned that some of the biggest challenges aren’t just logistical—they’re human.
Working with families during emotionally charged times requires patience, compassion, and understanding. Helping clients navigate the sale of a loved one’s belongings is a deeply personal experience, and handling it with care is essential.
There are also practical challenges. Negotiating with customers can be tricky—sometimes buyers try to haggle aggressively or even change price tags. Preparing a house for a sale demands careful planning and time management, from pricing items fairly to staging rooms thoughtfully. And the work is physically demanding; setting up and taking down sales requires stamina and strength.
Not every step is a struggle, but every step is a learning experience. Over time, the challenges teach you resilience, sharpen your skills, and deepen your appreciation for the work. Running a business this way is as much about personal growth as it is about professional success.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My sales specialize primarily in vintage and antique items, and I love walking into a client’s home and experiencing it as a kind of time capsule—a glimpse into their life and history. What sets me apart in this field is my honesty and integrity. I become deeply protective of my clients’ belongings, treating their assets with the same care I would my own family’s.
I’ve built a strong reputation in the estate sale industry, both with clients and customers, and I pride myself on being one of the fairly priced companies in Southern California. Beyond pricing, my focus is on results: I consistently achieve a high success rate in clearing out homes, which is truly the essence of what an estate sale is meant to accomplish.
What matters most to you?
What matters most to me is results. Results for my clients, who see a home completely cleared and organized, giving them peace of mind during what can be an emotional time. Results for my customers, who leave a sale feeling satisfied and inspired, knowing they’ve found something meaningful to cherish.
For me, success isn’t just about completing a transaction—it’s about the experience. It’s seeing a family relieved after a smooth, respectful sale, and watching repeat customers return, trusting that I will always provide honesty, integrity, and quality. These results reflect the care, attention, and dedication I put into every sale.
Ultimately, my goal is to create a process that is seamless, respectful, and rewarding for everyone involved. When both clients and buyers walk away feeling valued, confident, and delighted, I know the work I do has truly made an impact. That combination of tangible results and meaningful experiences is what drives me every day.
