Community Highlights: Meet Nolan Frymer of Engel Audio Visual

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nolan Frymer.

Hi Nolan, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I began as a musician when I was younger, but I’ve always had an interest in technology. I grew up performing bass and guitar anywhere that would have me, often sneaking behind the scenes to look at (and occasionally mess with) the backstage equipment. From there, the jump to working as an AV tech was inevitable. I picked up mixing and the basics of lighting from whoever was willing to teach me, and eventually saved up enough from little gigs to get my own equipment. All through high school I did tech for everything from funerals to weddings to backyard rock bands, gaining clients as I went.

I started my company, Engel Audio Visual, as a way to branch into professional AV production. Over the past few years, I’ve grown my inventory, clients, and associates well beyond my expectations. I have worked on projects ranging from large corporate events to films and beyond. I am eternally grateful to my clients, and everyone else who has helped me get this far.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Not at all! Starting any kind of business in California is difficult enough, but my industry is one mostly dominated by large players with millions in the bank. They might have resources, but I don’t see their CEOs picking up the phone for their clients, or working on the actual show. I do.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Engel Audio Visual?
Engel Audio Visual is a professional event AV and production company. We provide sound, lighting, staging and power rentals, as well as full-scale event production services.

I’m very proud of the quality of my work, but also of the level of efficiency at which I operate. Operating in a highly strategic and efficient way has allowed my business to maintain an exceptionally low overhead, which I am then able to pass on to my clients. All this is to say that I’m very competitive, and my clients like that.
