Today we’d like to introduce you to Larry Wong.
Hi Larry, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I changed my career at the age of 41. I studied architecture in college and worked in that field for 17 years. But I wanted a more fulfilling vocation where I could help people and directly impact their lives. Counseling seemed like a natural avenue so I returned to school to pursue a Master’s degree in Marital & Family Therapy. It was a scary proposition since I was already married and had two young children when I made my decision. But as soon as I started my studies, I knew this was the right decision for me.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It was not a smooth path to my new career. Being back in school as an older adult had its demands physically and mentally. It was also hard trying to balance my family life with my commitment to the program.
Another challenge was the humbling experience of “starting over” that comes with pursuing a new career. The starting pay was much lower. I was “on call” at the agency I worked for out of school. That meant having evening plans interrupted in order to meet the needs of patients.
Finally, when I launched my own private practice, it took a couple of years to build a caseload in which I was earning a profit.
However, I never doubted my career choice. The reward of helping people feel seen and understood was immeasurable.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Growth Through Healing Psychological Services?
My approach to the work I do as a therapist starts with the belief that each one of us has experienced emotional wounds in our lives. This kind of woundedness results in depression, anxiety, relationship hurts and often times traumatic harm to our sense of self. The process to heal takes time and it begins with telling your story. My specialty is the ability to help you to feel seen. By sharing your story, you are no longer alone. Empowered by the strength of being cared for and supported, your path to recovery becomes hope-filled.
