Today we’d like to introduce you to Kerrynton Jones.
Hi Kerrynton, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’m a Maryland native turned Angeleno, and have been dancing my entire life. I found Pilates through dance and immediately fell in love with the movement practice. That passion deepened through my personal practice as I discovered how Pilates transformed both my mind and body while supporting me through the physical and creative demands of my career in the entertainment industry even to this day. I have performed with some of the top music artists in the world, including Tate McRae, Karol G, Tinashe, Bebe Rexha, Halle Bailey and more. I truly credit my ability to dance on tour—both across the U.S. and internationally for several years injury-free to my commitment to a consistent Pilates practice.
I turned that passion into action by completing over 400 hours of comprehensive Pilates training across all apparatus and continuing my education through mentorship and a classical Pilates certification. After becoming certified, I was thrilled to have the knowledge and tools to help others discover the power of Pilates. Although fully comprehensive certified, I’m forever learning, growing and evolving so I look forward to continuing to be a student in both Pilates and life.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Making the choice to sign up for a Pilates certification program is a tough decision. There are so many options to consider, not to mention how the program and its workload fit into your daily life and routines. Once I found the option that worked best for me and completed my training, I realized that was one of the smaller challenges I would face on my Pilates journey as a teacher.
As a young Black woman, I was often the only person who looked like me in the room, both as a student and as a teacher. As a teacher, I was educated, knowledgeable, and credible, with a deep history as an experienced mover. Still, there were moments when I felt my knowledge being questioned or challenged.
I don’t look like what some people expect a Pilates teacher to look like. Yet during my time at a group reformer studio, it made my heart happy to watch that narrative begin to shift through the clients who showed up to my classes. I would hear that people were excited to take my class because they heard there was a Black instructor. Over time, client testimonies poured in. Stories of injuries they overcame. Positive reports from doctors. A spark of love for Pilates and excitement about developing a deeper understanding of the practice.
Similar to Pilates, sometimes the obstacle is the way, and over time the work begins to speak for itself. I look forward to continuing to do that as I lead and learn in the Pilates space, especially for BIPOC who may currently be the only student or teacher in the room, just like I once was.
I’m really proud that my private clientele looks like the world. I have the opportunity to educate people while helping them connect to their bodies. My clients are diverse in race, age, gender, body types, and fitness levels, because Pilates is for everybody.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Pilates For The Win?
I have found a special knack for working with high-level athletes, Pilates novice, those recovering from injuries, and of course, fellow dancers. In my work, I specialize in private Pilates training across a variety of settings, from personalized in-home sessions to in studio one-on-one, duet, small group formats and virtuals. I’m dedicated to elevating the whole person from inside out, challenging my clients to connect deeply, show up consistently and leave confidently. People are unique and their Pilates practice should reflect that which is why I love coaching individuals in a private setting. During sessions, I empower clients to take charge of their practice and support them with a deep understanding of personal anatomy, the apparatus and the Pilates repertoire to build lasting strength while restoring muscle imbalances.
The common thread between all my sessions is my approach. I coach clients to approach their bodies with an athlete’s mindset regardless of fitness level because that is what Pilates requires. The work demands concentration, control, centering, breath, precision and flow. Through the work we create goals, those goals eventually become standards and standards create results.
I’m most proud of the precise care I provide for my clients. I have had clients ask, “How do you remember and see all this?” The simple answer is that I try. To me, it is not just “stuff.” Your daily habits, movement patterns, injuries, aches, pains, big things, small things, and even the silly ones all matter. Pilates is challenging, but rewarding when you commit to the process. I stay attentive before, during and after sessions so I can support, lead, and guide my clients toward their goals.
That’s Pilates For The Win.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
One podcast I love is “She’s so Lucky” by Les Alfred. She is a great host and brings on a variety of guests that have incredible journeys from various walks of life. My biggest takeaways from the show are how entrepreneurs manage work life balance. It’s also really inspiring to hear about people’s unique experiences and pathways to success.
Another podcast that I’m tuned into regularly is “ONE Podcast”. ONE | A Potter’s House Church is an amazing church community full of fellow creatives. I love listening to the podcast on days I’m not able to make it into the house for service which helps me feel connected and grounded.
