Today we’d like to introduce you to Sophie Shah.
Hi Sophie, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Growing up, I was the kid who constantly left doctors’ offices without answers. From an early age, I understood that the American healthcare system was not built for cases like mine. I turned online looking for understanding, and through that search stumbled upon the chronic illness community. I was met with millions of stories that mirrored my own experience of navigating through a complex medical system without validation.
Seeing how these voices were overlooked and excluded from mainstream narratives reshaped my perspective. I had felt firsthand how powerful shared stories could be in changing the trajectory of a patient, and Chronically Me emerged from that realization. It initially began as a space to center patient voices and help people find community where fragmentation was the norm. As more patients found the platform, it expanded beyond storytelling into a connected ecosystem that supports patients in navigating their health and their place within it. Today, Chronically Me connects more than 150,000 patients worldwide.
Spending time listening to patients across conditions and backgrounds made systemic gaps increasingly difficult to ignore. In response, I grew the platform through community programs and the creation of patient-facing tools. Doing so required learning how to build and launch a mobile app, navigate policy spaces, and contribute to research efforts as a young woman with little experience.
This work has shaped how I see both healthcare and my own role within it. While it has given me a strong sense of direction, it has also made clear how much remains unresolved. That awareness continues to guide my commitment to this work and to the patients at its center.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The path has been challenging, though consistently forward-moving. One of the most persistent obstacles has been institutional inertia within medicine. Efforts to advocate for policy change or even modest shifts in perspective often met strong resistance. While working to expand patient access to their own health data, I was even told by practicing physicians that patients having too much information could be dangerous. That response reflected how deeply ingrained hierarchies that disadvantage patient agency remain within healthcare.
On a personal level, I also had to confront my own approach to leadership. Early on, I tried to carry everything myself. Over time, I learned that meaningful impact depends on scaled empowerment. By encouraging others to carry the mission of Chronically Me into their own communities, the work became both broader and more impactful.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Chronically Me is a global patient resource ecosystem designed to center lived experience within healthcare. The platform amplifies patient voices beyond clinical definitions and reconnects individuals who often navigate care in isolation with a broader, supportive community. At its core is the Chargies network, a 144,000+ member global patient community where discussions, storytelling, and relatable content foster connection and shared understanding. Chronically Me also engages patients worldwide through a growing ambassador network and national youth programs that cultivate the next generation of healthcare leaders. Through strategic partnerships with leading health-tech organizations and the development of its own patient-centered tools, the platform equips individuals to become informed participants in their care and advocates within their communities. What I am most proud of is the individual impact: watching patients advocate for themselves for the first time remains the clearest measure of success, and witnessing those moments unfold at scale continues to inspire the work we do.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Start with one person. One story. One problem you can see clearly. Early on, it is tempting to chase scale and visibiliy, but meaningful work grows from trying to make a difference in one perosn’s life. The most impactful work comes from paying attention to what is directly in front of you and responding with intention, and riding the ripple wave of impact wherever it takes you.
