Inspiring Conversations with Harry Grewal of Your Tax Team

Today we’d like to introduce you to Harry Grewal.

Hi Harry, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My journey into accounting and tax wasn’t about numbers as much as it was about problem-solving. Early on, I was drawn to understanding how money moves through businesses and how smart decisions—made early—can completely change outcomes later. That curiosity led me to pursue a commerce degree with a concentration in accounting, and eventually to earn my CPA license in California.

I started my career on the technical side, learning the rules inside and out, but it didn’t take long to realize that most people don’t need more forms—they need clarity and strategy. Too often, I saw business owners and investors paying more tax than necessary simply because no one had taken the time to step back and design a plan around their bigger picture.

That realization is what led me to build Your Tax Team. I’ve focused on working closely with high-net-worth individuals, real estate investors, and business owners to help them structure entities properly, navigate multi-state complexity, and make decisions that are proactive rather than reactive. A big part of my role today is translating complex tax concepts into practical, investor- and client-friendly strategies that people can actually act on.

Over the years, my work has expanded beyond tax returns into team leadership. What’s stayed constant is the mission: helping clients make smarter financial decisions with confidence, and building systems that support long-term growth—not just short-term compliance.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Not at all—it definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Like most entrepreneurial journeys, there were plenty of moments where things didn’t go according to plan. Early on, one of the biggest challenges was building trust. When you’re advising clients on high-stakes financial and tax decisions, credibility matters, and that takes time, consistency, and a lot of hard-earned wins.

Another challenge was learning to shift from being a strong technician to becoming a leader and business builder. In the beginning, I did almost everything myself—tax planning, compliance, client communication—because I wanted to make sure it was done right. Scaling beyond that required learning how to build systems, train teams, and let go of control without sacrificing quality, which was a real growth process.

There were also the inevitable pressures that come with working in tax: constant law changes, tight deadlines, and clients coming to you when something has already gone wrong. Navigating audits, notices, and complex situations taught me resilience and the importance of staying calm and strategic under pressure.

Looking back, those challenges shaped how I operate today. They pushed me to be more proactive, more client-focused, and more intentional about building a firm that’s not just technically strong, but also dependable and human. The obstacles weren’t detours—they were part of the foundation.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Your Tax Team is a full-service accounting and tax advisory firm, but at its core, we’re a strategy-first organization. We work primarily with high-net-worth individuals, real estate investors, and business owners who want more than basic compliance—they want a clear plan and a trusted advisor who understands the bigger picture.

What sets us apart is how we approach tax. We don’t just prepare returns after the fact; we focus heavily on proactive planning, entity structuring, and decision-making throughout the year. Whether it’s helping a client scale a business, structure real estate investments efficiently, or navigate multi-state and complex tax issues, our goal is always to reduce friction, risk, and unnecessary tax exposure before it becomes a problem.

We’re especially known for translating complex tax concepts into practical, client-friendly strategies. Many of our clients are sophisticated investors or operators, but they still want clarity—not jargon. We pride ourselves on creating financial reports, tax plans, and explanations that actually make sense and support confident decision-making.

From a brand perspective, what I’m most proud of is trust. Clients come to us not just to file returns, but when they’re making major financial moves or dealing with high-pressure situations like audits or notices. We’ve built a reputation for being calm, thorough, and dependable—especially when stakes are high.

What I want readers to know is that Your Tax Team isn’t about shortcuts or one-size-fits-all advice. We’re about thoughtful planning, long-term relationships, and helping clients build sustainable financial success with fewer surprises along the way.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up, I was naturally curious and pretty observant. I liked understanding how things worked—especially systems, patterns, and cause-and-effect—whether that was in school, sports, or everyday situations. I wasn’t the loudest person in the room, but I paid attention, asked a lot of questions, and liked figuring things out for myself.

Personality-wise, I’ve always been steady and thoughtful. I tended to think a few steps ahead and was comfortable taking on responsibility early. I also had a strong sense of independence, which showed up in my interest in business, money, and problem-solving at a relatively young age. I enjoyed learning, but I was especially drawn to subjects that had real-world application.

I’ve also always valued fairness and structure. Even growing up, I didn’t like seeing people confused, overwhelmed, or taken advantage of simply because they didn’t understand the rules. Looking back, that mindset shows up clearly in the work I do today—helping people make sense of complex systems and feel confident navigating them.

At the same time, I’ve always been grounded and relationship-oriented. I care deeply about trust, consistency, and doing what I say I’m going to do. Those traits shaped not just my career path, but the kind of business and brand I’ve built over time.
