Today we’d like to introduce you to ALEX VILLANUEVA.
Hi ALEX, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My path into lymphatic and lymphedema care is deeply personal. When my mother, Acelia Villanueva, went through breast cancer treatment, she developed lymphedema, a chronic swelling condition caused by damage to the lymphatic system. Watching her struggle with discomfort, mobility changes, and the lack of meaningful support around lymphatic care opened my eyes to a major gap in healthcare.
That experience stayed with me as I pursued occupational therapy. After becoming licensed, I sought out advanced training and earned my Certified Lymphedema Therapist credential, the highest clinical certification in lymphatic care. I went on to work in hospital-based settings, including Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital and Glendale Memorial. There, I treated patients recovering from cancer, surgery, trauma, and complex medical conditions using a combination of manual lymphatic drainage, compression bandaging, therapeutic exercise, and patient education.
While my patients consistently responded well to care, I began to see deeper issues within the hospital environment itself. Large campuses often required patients with swollen and painful limbs to walk far more than they were physically able. Many felt self-conscious about how they looked in busy, highly visible clinical spaces. Time that should have been devoted to treatment was often spent addressing basic positioning needs, as swelling made it difficult for patients to rest comfortably in standard setups before therapy could even begin. They valued the care they received, but struggled with the setting.
Over time, I realized that the problem was not the care itself, but the environment and systems surrounding it, and I set out to create a treatment space intentionally designed for people who need skilled lymphatic and lymphedema care. That vision became Lympha Villa, where lymphatic wellness and medical care blend seamlessly to elevate what lymphatic care can and should be.
Today, my work focuses on helping people heal, whether they are cancer survivors, post operative surgery patients, or individuals living with chronic swelling. I also support those seeking lymphatic wellness and preventative care. Everything I do is rooted in my mother’s experience. It shapes how I care for people during some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives, ensuring they feel seen, supported, and safe.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has not been a smooth road. Building Lympha Villa meant establishing a medically serious standard of lymphatic care in a space that is largely unregulated and often driven by trends rather than training. I understood early on that this approach would create friction, but I was never interested in building something easy or diluted.
One of the real challenges was holding firm on standards while educating patients who were understandably confused by what they had seen online. Many people arrived with very real lymphatic conditions, yet their only exposure to lymphatic drainage had been cosmetic or loosely defined wellness services, often without clear guidance around what is appropriate or safe for medical needs. As a result, each visit required setting expectations and explaining what proper lymphatic care actually involves and why it matters.
Those standards extended beyond technique into the physical space itself. I personally designed and built a 1400 square foot clinic with first floor access and full ADA compliance, so clients with swelling, mobility limitations, or post surgical needs could receive care comfortably. The environment was created intentionally to remove the barriers I had repeatedly seen patients struggle with in hospital settings.
I also made a deliberate decision that Lympha Villa would not compromise on qualifications. All therapists are required to be Certified Lymphedema Therapists, the highest level of certification in lymphatic care. That choice has slowed growth and made hiring more difficult, but it has protected patients and preserved the integrity of the work.
The road was harder because I chose it to be. I could have followed trends and expanded faster, but instead I focused on building trust, outcomes, and a reputation rooted in real expertise. That foundation is what Lympha Villa stands on today.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Lympha Villa?
Lympha Villa is a specialized lymphatic care practice focused on supporting people across medical, post surgical, and wellness needs. We specialize in manual lymphatic drainage massage, lymphedema management, and lymphatic support for recovery and long term health, using evidence based techniques supported by compression, movement, and education when appropriate.
What sets Lympha Villa apart is that we operate at the intersection of medical precision and restorative wellness. All of our therapists are Certified Lymphedema Therapists, allowing us to safely treat complex conditions like cancer related lymphedema and post operative swelling, while also offering lymphatic wellness care for clients focused on recovery, prevention, and overall balance. We position ourselves as a lymphatic wellness and medical boutique, but without blurring lines or lowering standards. Care is always intentional, individualized, and grounded in real training.
Brand wise, what I am most proud of is the impact the work has on people’s lives. We see post operative clients recover more smoothly and comfortably. We see lymphedema clients reduce swelling enough to fit into shoes again or move with more confidence. We see wellness clients leave feeling deeply rested, refreshed, and surprised by how well they sleep after treatment. Those outcomes, both physical and emotional, are what matter most.
Lympha Villa is unique because we make high quality lymphatic care accessible without stripping it of its integrity. We blend hospital grade lymphatic knowledge with a deeply restorative experience, so people do not have to choose between medical seriousness and feeling cared for. Our goal is to raise the standard of lymphatic care while making it something people feel safe, supported, and genuinely grateful to receive.
What matters most to you? Why?
What matters most to me is responsibility paired with care. When someone trusts you with their body, their recovery, or their well being, that trust deserves patience, honesty, and real attention. I take that responsibility seriously, especially in a field where people are often unsure what to expect or who to trust.
I am motivated by the belief that lymphatic care should be delivered with both skill and intention. Everyone has a lymphatic system, yet very few people truly understand its role in healing and overall health. That lack of understanding exists both among the general public and within healthcare itself, and it has real consequences for people living with conditions like lymphedema or lipedema. I want Lympha Villa to feel like a place where people can exhale, feel cared for, and know they are in capable, attentive hands.
At the core of my work is a commitment to showing up consistently and practicing with integrity, a standard shaped by my mother, Acelia Villanueva, and her experience navigating breast cancer and lymphedema. Lympha Villa is supported by a dedicated team, including therapist Leahmay Castillo, office manager Martina Ricabar, and the occupational therapy students who train with us, all of whom contribute meaningfully to the care we provide. Whether someone comes to Lympha Villa for wellness lymphatic care, post cosmetic surgery recovery, or ongoing support for lymphedema, my commitment is the same: to deliver care that is thoughtful, skilled, and never compromised.
