Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Pamela Abramson-Levine.
Hi Dr. Pamela, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’d wanted to become a doctor since age 9. While studying for my BS in Physiological Sciences/Kinesiology at UCLA, I became disillusioned with mainstream conventional medicine. I was unsure of what to do with my life for the first time since the 3rd grade!
At the same time, I was taking a technical writing class, and the whole course was writing a 20 page thesis paper with a connection to our major field of study, or to our future career. I decided to write mine on sports injuries–causes, treatments–rehabilitation–and prevention. During my research I discovered that one of the subjects of my paper–Joe Montana–who had suffered a severe back injury that year as the 49ers QB, was under the care of a doctor of chiropractic. I interviewed this doctor and immediately felt connected to this drug-free healing profession. I researched more about it and decided that becoming a doctor of chiropractic was now my goal and path.
Once I graduated from UCLA and started chiropractic school at Los Angeles College of Chiropractic, I was drawn to the areas of obstetrics/prenatal and pediatric chiropractic.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Is the road of life ever completely free from bumps, obstacles and detours? No…
It is a cliche’, and it is true that being an entrepreneur and a family woman can be challenging.
My husband traveled extensively for work, and was only home for 2 weekends per month for several years. I was the parent at home taking care of our two children–getting them up and driving them to school each day–picking them up and taking them to music lessons and sports practices & games–all while working to maintain my Prenatal, Pediatric & Family Practice Chiropractic practice.
Those were difficult years, and honestly they were financially lean for my business. Yet I knew I was not in this only for the money–so I was not going to give it up. Helping my patients is a calling and a passion–I care deeply about them and about my mission to help people to live their healthiest lives naturally.
Once my younger child became a proficient driver, I was able to focus more on growing the practice, and the last 6-7 years have been ones of growth for me as a doctor, and for the practice overall. Keeping with it when it was tough was the right decision, and I’m so happy that I kept up the practice even when it was difficult to do so.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am the owner and founder of Dr. Pamela Abramson-Levine, Prenatal, Pediatric, and Family Practice Non-Force Chiropractor. I am a licensed Doctor of Chiropractic and an IBCLC (Internationally Board Certified Lactation Consultant).
My approach to Chiropractic care is extremely gentle. . I specialize in Directional Non-Force Technique® (DNFT®) adjustments, a very gentle and effective method of realigning the body to decrease pain, and to regain optimal biomechanical and neurological function. I am certified in the Webster Technique, a system for analyzing, adjusting and properly aligning the pregnant pelvis and its associated structures in order to improve childbirth outcomes.
Many people may not be familiar with Infant Chiropractic care. It is a very large part of my practice, and I am known for combining Infant Chiropractic care and lactation consulting. When adjusting infants, the amount of pressure used is the same as one would use to gently check if a tomato or peach is ripe. These gentle adjustments make profound improvements for my tiniest patients!
My journey to become a lactation consultant began as I witnessed many of my infant patients’ improved latch and breastfeeding outcomes as a result of my performing gentle adjustments to the newborns’ cranial bones, sacrum, pelvis, & vertebra. This inspired me to want to learn more ways to assist and support mothers and babies to successfully breastfeed, leading me to return to school, and become an IBCLC.
I am extremely proud of my work weaving together Prenatal Chiropractic care, Infant Chiropractic care, and lactation consulting. I am passionate about educating my patients, and other health care providers on the importance of Chiropractic care during pregnancy, and during infancy. I am proud to say that several OBGYNs and pediatricians refer their patients to me for care.
I am also very proud to be a TED Speaker. My TED Talk, “Better Birth & Breastfeeding with Chiropractic Care” can be viewed on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uBGL7YZ2JZE
What sets me apart from others is my extensive training, continuing education, and 32 years of clinical practice, constantly improving and adding to my knowledge and skills.
